anyone got any good suggestions, the new sony Walkman looks
good bit on the expensive side though, I want to listen to
music in bed without the glare of the laptop screen and when
I go for walks with my brother

ask yourself two questions:

1. what music player/library do you use on you computer?
2. what do you have more of, flac or wav?

for example itunes wont use flac/wav,
so apple and ipods would fall flat...

me still using mp3s and the occasional ALAC im well off with
my good old ipod

since you specifically asked for flac, wav you probably knew
apple is a no go for you unless they changed that stupid
policy to ignore these formats

yeah I cant tell the different between high quality mp3 and
wav/flac I just tend to rip everything to flac for the sake
of it, I used to have a really good sony 20 gig mp3 player
about 10 years ago but I gave it away as a Christmas present

yes I'm not overly keen on apple products because of their
proprietary software and cables, when I buy something I want
to do what I want with it, not to say their stuff isn't well
made it usually is. Also I had ITunes on my pc once and it
made the disk drive fuck up so that put me off a bit

now im curious..
are your flac tagged in any way?
what do you use to play your files?
do you just explore your hard drive or do you have a library
program?
do you shuffle, or usually play albums?

offline Hyperflake from Wirral (United Kingdom) on 2017-08-31 12:23 [#02530337]

yes my flacs are tagged, I rip my cds with fairstairs cd
ripper, or easy cd extract, I play usually entire albums at
a time, but occasionally just tracks I want to listen to. I
use VLC player to play them, I have an external hard drive
that's stores back up copies of my FLACs and a separate
internal hard drive just for my music, ive never used
shuffle

I'm confused. When I put wav files into my iPhone or iPad
they work fine. Does this mean they are automatically being
converted to MP3, but not telling me?

oh wait they do play wav...
the files on your pad and phone are probably wav too ~
afaik itunes only has import settings to rip cds not for
exporting to portable devices
think i mixed something up, sorry

your going to listen to a walkman whilst you walk with your
brother?

galaxy 'S' dac chip Wolfson's WM8994 DAC was nice, with
vlc eq.

concidering you can pick one up for 15 quid . bargain.

also good audio recording

you can have maps and camera and all sorts of apps and
video. just stating obvious,

that might be a good idea actually, £15 would do
everything I wanted, I have this old htc sitting around
doing nothing, wonder what the battery life is like on it
running vlc app, I suppose that's why I wanted dedicated
player as well, 32 hour battery life

the sound is great...but.. better than an ipod designed for
the job (sound)likely not.

i never had any bad feelings regards the s1 sound. it is a
bit slow at times on teh net. but i had maps and all sorts
of things. was fun to use.

oh yeah missed the reference, for some reason I thought it
was from DUNE

"the most precious substance in the universe is the spice
Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands
consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel. The
Spacing Guild and its navigators, who the spice has mutated
over 4,000 years, use the orange spice gas, which gives them
the ability to fold space. That is, travel to any part of
universe without moving"

sansa clip plus plays flac and wav, it also has a micro SD
slot up to 32GB. there are some current models with micro SD
slots (sansa clip sport lists FLAC support, sansa clip jam
does not). nice thing about the clip plus was the OLED
blue+gold display. the newer ones are TFT or white OLED.
amazon still sells cliip plus, but its 4x the cost of the
new models.

i had a first generation but when the battery died (after a
couple years of heavy use) i couldn't find a replacement
battery, had to buy a new one. firmware is a little flaky
but i think there is an open source firmware out there.
