By modern era I'm thinking of the start of Aphex's career, so from about 1990 onwards.
For me I think it's Muisic Has the Right to Children, now nearly 20 years old! It has always gelled with me very deeply.

re MHRC
It was one of the first Warp records I ever bought, when I was about 16 old. Didn't know a thing about electronic music then, but was really impressed by the melodies, the little bits of singing and all the ornamentation. Loved the hip hop beats and crunchiness of the sounds. Has the best bits of Autechre to it. The cover is creepy and mysterious. The techno equivalent of Spiderland, something magical about it.

I think I'll have to be boring and say drukQs because I still listen to it about once a month, and quite often still hearing tiny new things in it.

The albums that make me think "this is ambient techno and I never get bored listening to" are all in the obvious box, I guess;
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 Black Dog Productions - Bytes B12 - (Electro - Soma) Various Artists - Artificial Intelligence Various Artists - The Positiva Ambient Collection Autechre - Incunabula
BOC to me are something else, their own ... thing. To me they're, and this will sound wank, to me they belong to something older, like 70s and 80s soundtracks and hip hop. Whereas the other stuff is kind of, ... retro future. Detroit I guess, but n general, when it comes to the originators, I like half of it, not all of it. I was watching/listening to some Carl Craig set in Miami the other day. He looks really good.

I like their music, their production always sounds a bit too slick for my liking would sound better on cassette I reckon

Bytes and electrosoma are two of mine too. I think it's telling that with albums like these, saw, mhtrtc etc is that you could release them today and they'd still be loved and unique because they weren't chasing trends.

do any of you guys record your tracks on cassette? or reel to reel even? cassette is too lo-fi and i'm afraid of r2rs. I feel like they would watch you in the dark. i get that vibe from them.

I record the generative ambient stuff I make to help me sleep while travelling on reel to reel. The tape hiss helps them do their job

I used to on cassette, they can have a good sound quality if you use the right tape and the right deck, surprisingly good but they are prone to issues, I would really really really like a good reel to reel, I will save up for one me thinks,
have you seen techmoan on youtube, he goes into a lot of this stuff
