O Canada. Blasphemy laws in the 21st Century are just so
fucking progressive! Is this some kind of hipster,
retro shit? Because, like that ghastly neck tattoo, it's
going to take some undoing once the novelty's worn off.

As an atheist, I reserve the right to bad mouth/criticise
any religious group and if anyone passes a law that prevents
me from doing so, they can go fuck themselves.

Though if I am going around saying Kill all Muslims (or
Christians) or whatever. That's hate speech and a cause for
concern.

It's good that they are conducting a "needs analysis" - not
sure if this is the right way to go about it.

Motion 103, also known as M-103, is a motion proposed
during the 42nd Canadian Parliament by Iqra Khalid, a
Liberal MP representing Mississauga—Erin Mills. The motion
states that the members of the House of Commons call on the
Government of Canada to condemn Islamophobia in Canada and
"all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination".
It also calls on the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage
to carry out a study on how racism and religious
discrimination can be reduced and collect data on hate
crimes.

[...]

Some people have incorrectly called it a "bill or a law, out
of confusion or deliberate attempts to spread
misinformation". M-103 is a private member's motion, which
is a "proposal moved by an MP to draw attention to an issue
considered urgent or of public interest".

What's funny is that crazy uncles, grandmas and pepes are
emailing and facebooking that it's a blasphemy law.

It's just going to make haters even more filled with
hatred.

I'm all, for laws to protect people from the discriminating
behavior of others, but there's a grey (yes, spelt with an
e) area I feel. I want to be able to disagree with certain
points religions raise, without animosity, without hurting
someone, and without being labeled an islamophobe,
anti-christian, mysoginist, or antisemite bastard.

I'm sure there will be times when this law will prove
useful, and times when it will be censorship.

Unfortunately there's a lot of bigots out there who are
filled with hate, and not opinions they're willing to debate
respectfully. Hence this blockage in free speech.

yes grey area is right, i suppose its complex situation, i
dont think it should be illegal to say something like i
stuck a easter egg up my arse on palm sunday, but to say it
to a christian in a cathedral is a different matter

When does it stop? That's what I'm thinking.

Soon I'll be able to sue someone who dislikes the way I
dress.

"The day he said my jeans sucked, it was like my whole life
stopped that day. I didn't brush my teeth for seven years,
and nearly committed suicide, so powerful had become my low
self esteem. He ruined my life. I demand the four years
salary I didn't get because I was sad as compensation"

"She said she hates green eyes, but it's not my fault I have
green eyes. Why can't she respect my green eyes?..."

"That tennis racket-waving cunt said football was shit!"

conversely i have to admit there is still a culture of
bigotry and sexism as well so i dont want to appear one
sided on this issue

Indeed fleetmouse, not a law! It's... whatever that is.
Something to spark debate, I suppose. Even if the facebook
masses have it wrong, at least they are grappling with the
issue.

@Hyperflake I wouldn't worry, I doubt anyone thinks you are
one sided about anything (maybe somethings? Idk). You are a
multifaceted individual (no jokes) who clearly likes to
consider all sides of an issue. I'm not even joking when I
say, that if you ever do find yourself in the position of
having your own autocracy, I might consider moving there!
You would make good laws, I'm sure.

You could also abolish all laws but one and have everyone be
nice to each other or die! That should keep people in check.
Your courts would probably be a mess and many would die.
Nevertheless, one could make a life there.

Loosely related, some good news in another part of the world

I'm posting this in here, since I don't really want to start
another thread about it. Sorry, Canada but I'm happy and
want to share it.

Bad timing for me though, since I'm trying to cut down.

Still wondering how a motion to "condemn Islamophobia in
Canada and all forms of systemic racism and religious
discrimination" can be construed as relating to blasphemy.
Did I miss something about floggings for wearing your shoes
in the mosque?
