him as jazz though

Great topic! I love the "real" 60's jazz

A list like this is impossible but these are some of my all
time faves, mixed with some I've really enjoyed lately:

1. Andrew Hill - Point of Departure
2. Eric Dolphy - Live at the 5 Spot Vol. 1
3. Andrew Hill - Passing Ships
4. Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth
5. Thelonious Monk . Genius of Modern Music Volume 1&2
6. Charles Mingus - Mingus at Antibes
7. Hank Mobley . No Room for Squares
8. Grant Green - Live at the Lighthouse
9. Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles
10. Jackie McLean - A Fickle Sonance

That's a great list, checking it out now on spotify. Makes
me realize how weak my jazz game is.

I'm glad you like it. And there's plenty more where that
came from. I discovered jazz in the 2000's, when I was a bit
tired of electronic music. I started buying these reasonably
priced jazz cds from Blue Note, Impulse, and Prestige. They
all had extensive liner notes and one purchase always led to
two others. After a short while I had a nice jazz collection
and knew a lot about jazz. Cd and vinyl is really the way to
go about jazz because of all the stuff written in the liner
notes.

Andrew Hill really got me started with my obsession with
jazz. His Point of Departure took me many spins to figure
out, much like an Autechre album would. It is a beautiful
and strange set of compositions and one of my all time
favorite albums. He did not limit himself stylistically
though and albums like "Grass Roots" and "Passing Ships" are
really quite soulful and funky. He is one of the few Blue
Note artists that was given full artistic freedom and
unlimited recording time - well, as far as that was possible
anyway - but a lot of his recordings stayed in the vaults
for a long time with the dropping interest in jazz at the
end of the 60's and 70's. During the 2000's a lot of his
great recordings surfaced for the first time.

Another favorite of mine is Eric Dolphy. He is a part of the
sextet on Point of Departure, a protege of Mingus and an
admirable devotee of his own musical art. He mastered three
instruments and developed his own very personal way of
playing and although he only recorded over a period of
roughly 5 years the output is overwhelming in volume and
artistic span. I' ve been trying to track down all of his
recordings and this is what I've come up with so far:
LAZY_Dolphy

Dolphy played with A LOT of the greatest jazzmen of his time
and his 5 active years leading up to his tragic death is a
history of jazz on its own: Coltrane, Coleman, Chico
Hamilton, Max Roach, Booker Little, John Lewis, Oliver Ne

I was listening to that Hank Mobley yesterday, really good.
I notice Andrew Hill plays on that too, fella got around. I
think you're right about physical media, I can see how
following the trails of bread crumbs is easier with liner
notes instead of pissing around with downloads and wikipedia
and that.

Will give the Andrew Hill albums a listen next... the only
Eric Dolphy I know is Out to Lunch, have some catching up to
do there.

If you liked "No Room for Squares" by Hank Mobley then you
can't go wrong with "Jackie's Bag" by Jackie McLean. Just
saying... :-)
