Kodi is basicaly a free open source media software, for various platforms. Users can create builds, different skins etc or you can download someones build.
The bottom line is, anything you can think of is accessable from Kodi, Live tv from all over the world, latest movie streams, tv shows, documentaries, even sky is on there, like premium packages, lots of HD and 4k stuff too
The content comes from hundreds of sources, that gets updated, you occasionaly get dead links, so it's not perfect, but it's very useful and convenient.
If you're interested i reccomend getting the fire stick from amazon, the only problem is it takes a little work learning how to install it and get it customized for things you like.

kodi in a way you can think of it like turning your tv into a smart tv, with free apps and paid apps, like if you have netflix , but there are shit loads of free apps that are better than netflix and premium subscriptions

It is legal, the Firestick is made and sold by Amazon, you can install your normal apps like youtube, netflix and so on, but you can also get other addons that are made by programmers. Ones like Genesis, Pheonix, these are compiled links to movies, tv shows etc it uses sites like putlocker which could mean streaming a movie which violates a law somewhere, but these days it's so ubiquitous, that it's unlikely you'd get into any legal problems, as long as you are a user and not providing the service.
I think sofware is based on the early versions of the xbox dashboard, it was called XBMX, than later became Kodi and has developed into quite a powerful software for entertainment.
