Am I wasting my time/energy?

Adam alsooximately 15 years ago I saw Aphex Twin live and
it had a profound effect on me. Being as I was a guitarist
and mostly unaware of electronic music, the performance
opened me up to a world I had never really knew existed.
His (aphex twin) set comprised of what I then considered
predominantly industrial and harsh sounds beaming from a
wall of analogy equipment.
It was truly inspiring and luckily for me, a friend had a
drum machine, synth and various effects that he encouraged
my new interest.
As I was quite new to anything like this, I assumed
distortion was the solution to the sound that was embedded
into my mind. I no sooner found the amen break and
unbeknownst to me, I began to make breakcore (I was
completely unaware of this though).
I soon found myself playing shows and was dubbed a breakcore
artist despite not knowing much about it and it stuck.
It has been over 15 years now, writing, playing pubs and
parties and despite experimenting with many facets of
electronic music, I cannot shake the breakcore moniker.
Should this even concern me? Personally, I would like to
push further than the confines of a genre that at times may
be considered throw away beats, exploring the vast tapestry
of electronic sound and to also shoot for more than a few
illegal parties for a handful of punters.
I am not bitter, but greatful for the opportunities I have
had.
I also fear betraying those few that have been loyal to me
for so long.
I have my first CD planned for release quite soon and am
doubting what future I may have as manifestevil. Am I
wasting my time or energy?
Is it time to start something new?

m8 don't worry about it. coincidentally I was just yesterday
thinking about the oldskool sydney parties in '03 or so,
seeing you play in a park etc.. after I saw something wayne
said on facebook about finding some of your old live
recordings. I remember your stuff was always a distinctly
different style to the usual breakcore shit I'd hear around
the place.

it's always good to give something new a go though, I'm
doing that every 6 months or so hahah

It's all you, man- you can do whatever you want. However,
your "issue" is the reason why music artists tend to have
multiple monikers. It's a weird thing in electronic music,
where somehow "different genres" require names that also
come from that vibe or whatever. But really, it's all you,
man, however you label the sound or yourself.

Tons of the greatest breakthroughs for artists has just been
fooling around and experimenting long enough to find
something that feels sincere. So maybe you're calling out
to yourself and wanting to express a musical side of you
that's been repressed, after so many years of portraying
yourself in a sound that maybe doesn't best represent who
you are anymore.

Thank you all for your responses and humor. ;)
Rf: Thanks, I like to think I attempted to push the
boundaries to some degree and the questions i asked in my
orig. post are similar to those i often asked myself then.
I have lost a lot of old tracks stored on Cd and hard drive
crashes and thanks to Wayne was able to get some back. As
far as live recordings, I only have a short clip from a
Newcastle show and am unsure if any others exist. I do plan
to release some newer tracks played at the Kws reunion
earlier this year soon too.

Jnasato: After I reread my post later, I must admit these
seem like questions only I can answer, however i do agree
and am searching to express my music in a less confined
manner and am most likely getting caught up in deciding to
contine or stop manifestevil, when it may suit me better to
concentrate on moving forward with something new.

Thanks again, I have much to consider.

I'd like to think you made more of an impact as a breaker
artist, which is a moniker you will obviously then have
difficulty shaking off.

What will be left when you go though will be an ensemble of
work.

People are obsessed with genres. I find that so strange, and
limiting.

breaker=breakcore* (autoincorrect)

Thanks Russelldust. I guess from my perspective it is
difficult to see what impact I have made, if at all. I don't
mean that to sound self loathing, however, I admit I am
prone to being self critical.
Although I dubbed my music as horrortronica, Drum n brains
or any other ridiculous title I made up as a parody of sub
genres, breakcore is the one that I am stuck with and must I
guess embrace.
I too find the obsession with genres limiting, hence my
dilemma.
I suppose the best thing I can do is to embrace it all. Find
new musical pursuits to expand into... Manifestevil may
dissappear or may rise again, but it may serve me better to
not think in terms of finality, but to think in terms of
what is right for me now.

Yeah just be honest with yourself, let it out, stop being
the breakcore guy for a bit!

Any links btw?

Thanks for the encouragement, I do appreciate it.
I have been experimenting in other areas. One in particular
involving my wife and I doing what I would crudely describe
as an experimental dead can dance (best description I can
think of, though it is more than that).
I have also been composing my own music (guitar, vocals,
bass drum etc) for a few years now, which may see the light
of day soon perhaps.
I have some analog gear I want to play around with, am
interested in ambient soundscapes and electronica but prefer
to leave it open to what happens and not focus too hard on a
direction. Just to enjoy experimentation.

Some links:
Soundcloud:

Digital album (free):
Dead but not buried

Video: (video is newish, track is my best example of
clipping abuse done for a 2007 compilation called no sense
makes sense)
The sweet smell of fear on fresh meat

Most if not all tracks are quite old & imo some suffer from
poor sound quality, but they were from approx 10-15 years
ago, so i can live with that.
Thanks for your interest.

I think you clearly made a deal with the devil, or at least
some demon, to grant you the skills and the success you've
enjoyed in this Gore-Beat, Stab n Bass, Schlocktronica, or
whatever genre it's called. You rode that blood-foamed tide
high for a decade. But now the bass has dropped out of the
bottom of the buket drum. It's time to repent and suffer,
probably for eternity.

May the name ManifestEvil be a millstone round your neck,
that sinks you to the very bottom of the deepest turd-ocean
in HELL! MAY YOU KNOW SUFFERING, LIKE I DID JUST NOW
LISTENING TO YOUR TRACKS.

...as much as I loathe self help literature, I downloaded a
kindle sample of this book and ended up buying it...it's a
light read that certainly gave me a (much needed) fresh
perspective on my music production, among other things. I
love to make music but often feel stuck inside my
own....uh..box or whatever. This book gives some friendly
advice on how to unclutter oneself from self imposed crap
and has a nice take on stopping wasting time/energy (that
was in the title of this topic, was it not?). Anyway, I'd
recommend this book to anyone strugling with creative
pursuits, particularly (electronic) music production....

Entertaining and creative response Signeduptolol. I enjoyed
that.
You aren't the first to have suffered though. I have cleared
a few dance floors and made some feel rather ill previously.
Apparently not everyone enjoys disembowelment or watching
someone bathe in offal.

In a better place with this now.
Thankyou all for your advice.
