Your MP3's worth?

Recently I had to format my c: drive and lost all my data,
except, fortunately, I transfered all my mp3s to my d: drive
a few days before the crash. I was thinking about how happy
I was that I had saved the mp3s, while I had lost my
documents, images, digital camera pictures. The only thing
that was replaceable had the most valuable to me. So I was
just wondering, how much would you pay for your mp3
collection, if you were to lose the whole thing, or would
you just fuckit and download it again. Pretty stupid
question, just bored in Astronomy class.

I have my mp3s on a 45 G drive. Only about 5% are
downloaded, I have CDs of thr rest. Even so, since 45 G
drives are under $100 I went out and bought another one and
mirrored the drives, so I don't have to worry about that
sort of thing.

I don't have to worry either...
I have my entire collection on data-cd.
I had to use them several times, cuz my computer crashes
about twice a year.

I'd be pretty pissed off, but I wouldn't pay to get them
back. I'd rather just download 'em again. Most of them are
stuff ripped from my cds anyway.
I'd probably pay to get my artwork and porn back though :(

I'd be pissed about losing all my own music and music
related files!! taken me ages to make, and probably never
make them again!

I've been thinking about the amount of time I sevite to
downloading MP3s and backuping em up etc...

Can't help feeling that once Cable/ hignspeed/WiFi
connections are the norm & our connections to the net are
24/7 then the net itself would become one huge distrubted
Hard Disk and anything will be available whenever you want
without having to wait...

This isn't that far away...I know several Linux hackers (and
I mean hacker in the proper way, not the malcious way; true
hackers are the lifeblood & creators of our future...), I
digress...anyway I know several hackers who have been
working on this sort of setup for a long time & they have
systems like this up n running...

Obviously, this shit ain't ready for the mainstream or even
non-techhead use but it does make you wonder & , to me
antice................................................patio
personally, salivate in n...

I also wonder if our desire to posess digital data is some
sort of refection of the way we consider digital data to
have some physical form & so treat as we would a CD or Video
or any phsycal item....

An interesting area...sorry if I sound a little
intellectutal tonight but these things are worth a good
discussion and I'd love to hear how d'ya feel about this
kinda stuff....

(p.s. FUCK....sorry, it's in my soul never to post without
swearing at least once..;)..gotta keep my image as an IDM
Yob going...

Sorry jand, you lost me on your second post. :) The first
thing you talked about is already here. I can listen to my
music collection anywhere in the world (as long as there is
a phone line + internet) from my streaming server at home. I
also listen to it throughout the house with wi-fi and
modified laptop computers ...

oops i wasn't goona reply yet....hit reply by
accident.......now it looks messy : (

I like having lots of mp3's on my computer , its so easy to
switch music when you feel like it , just a couple of
clicks.
Sometimes thats a hassle with cd and vinyl ....finding
it....take it out....put it on.

in summer of 2000 i lost 18 gigs of mp3's. i've prolly
re-downloaded 7 gigs of that and bought (cd's) a gig or so
of them back. the lesson is to back up your mp3's, or at
least keep a list of mp3's you have (which i didn't have
after my computer crashed).

wi-fi is cheap, fast wireless networking gear. It's really
taking off in the States.

Erm, what exactly MAKES your computer crash and burn like
that? A virus? It happened to me right after I got my
computer in the summer, but my uncle put anti-virus software
on it.

And how do you back up your MP3s, just put them on a data CD
or something?

buy an expensive fire wire hard drive or spend a couple
hundred dollars and a few DAYS time on cd-r's.

To clarify, is it not somehow skewed to own (possess)
something that has no phisical form of itself...and is
something that is availble to everyone/anywhere...

Does that make better sense?...someone less stoned help me
out..;)...(rest assured, I was straight when I posted the
above couple of posts....)...

Usually the drive will just have mechanical failure and it's
game over, but I remember at least one virus that
specifically targeted and erased mp3s and jpgs.

Hard drives contain moving parts, so they're prone to
mechanical failure after a while. Interesting analogy - the
heads that read the data are so close to the spinning disks,
that it'd be like flying a 747 at top speed 3 feet off the
ground.

If you notice a high-pitched whine coming from your hard
drive, back up your data! You could be in for a hard crash
on the drive...i know some people who found this out the
hard way...

EEEEEEKKKK!!!!

Now I'm paranoid... I don't want to lose the porn and the
music and the movies and the programs and the games and the
roms and everything else...

yeah, i have a few HD platters (the steel circle that
contain the actual data..imagine a Hard ticker version of a
uncased floppy disk)... just to remind me that at the end of
the day, HD technology is really just a evolution of the
good old record player but spining at 5000+ RPM....sure,
they use magnatic fluctuations in the mangetive material on
the HD platter rather than the actual gooves of vinyl...but
the parallels between the 2 are obvious; you are trusting
your data to a physical device & these will always be prond
to decay & mechnical issues....

In other news....

I must made an entire track from the sound of 2 8" harddisk
platter being hit together etc....created some wonderful
noises and, as I'm sure most of you soundboffs know, you can
practically take any sound and create any other sound from
it....

Still, I've always believed that most art thrives the odd
limitation or two (witness Acid House, Stencil
Grafetti)...remeber that next time you're proud of your
sample collection or you find your HD full of more plug-ins
than compositions....

Shite, I am a little wordy tonite....apologies...
