Hardware sequencer

My macbook busted so I'm going all gear for the moment, but
I need a sequencer and I'd like some recommendations. I'm
trying to stick to a budget so built in synth/sampling is
nice but not necessary. It doesn't have to be new either, as
long as it's not so old that it only saves to floppy or zip,
etc. I'd like it to be intuitive enough that it doesn't
send weird program change messages on its own or frustrating
things like that.

Maybe an older MPC or something else?

I don't even know what a sequencer is, the system made me
too poor to afford one anyway. I would search youtube for:
sequencer review. You can still use youtube to learn things
like which sequencer to buy and flat earth theory, they are
still mostly in the phase of appearing like a public
commons, not yet at the phase where they use the power from
their first mover advantage and monopoly the public built to
shut it all down and turn it into insider-only unlevel
playing field rigged market propaganda surveilled weaponized
piece of infrastructure. All other centralized systems take
this path, ebay already did, soundcloud will eventually, you
can't trust anything.

possibly one of the small Yamaha QY sequencers, used - they
have onboard sounds but also midi out. I think russelldust
has one, he'd be able to tell you more.

Can't be done.

Yeah, RD is a beast with the QY!

Basically I have two situations to tackle. One is my Volcas
which have no external save or midi out. So it's either
sample them, sequence them externally, or just be OK with
capturing sessions and only having audio if I clear the
onboard patterns.

The other is my Waldorf Q which has a 32 step sequencer but
it's old school. I'd like to chain patterns and make song
arrangements. Over tried using Ableton for this stuff and I
just kind of hate it.

I'll check out the QY though thx.

I think for now I'll try to sequence from the Waldorf. I
can't make a song arrangement per se, but 16 32-step
patterns is better than the 8 8-step ones on the Volcas.
Fading in and out patterns will just give it a Tri Repetae
or Analord feel. Plus you can actually transpose patterns
over the keyboard which gives more options for changes.

Later I'll decide whether to get a sequencer or look into
tablet or touch screen mpc type options. I just always had
problems using midi with Ableton Live.

wMw a tracker is a kind of sequencer.

That price point tho. It'd be perfect for like half that.
More in the range of Arturia's beat pro, except that's
monophonic.

I might just get a newer drum machine like the Akai XR20 and
use it to frame song arrangements and maybe sequence a bass
synth while I live toggle patterns on other gear.

If you're used to the volcas then why not get a Korg ESX 1
SD? You can store all your songs on a memory card (better to
get the SD version)

I just got a volca sample, sounding pretty shit hot at the
moment, i like the limitations because it makes me work
harder with that i have

A Yamaha An1x (with usb mod) or an Elektron unit would cover
your needs.

That's exactly where I'm at. In a Daw when I want the part
to change I'd just write a new pattern and punch in or hit
record and play. That's easy, except that now the most
native version of my song is basically a DAT backing track.
Even if there's midi clips and softsynths it's like having
vector layers in a Photoshop file.

Now I have to do things like run the change parts to the sub
outs and switch over on the mixer because all the patterns
play at once or are buried in dials and menus that aren't
instantly accessible.

Yea if I could afford an Octatrack I'd be all set. Sample
it, sequence it, cares. I bet you could resample
everything and not even worry about load times.

I use an octatrack although it's surprisingly limited as a
MIDI sequencer if you're using polyphonic instruments. Have
you looked at the Arcturus stuff? The beatstep is great for
a single synth and the pro looks nice with two sequencer
tracks and a drum track.

I read the specs and it said it was monophonic only. Then I
watched the demo video and sure enough everything was
arpeggiated.

Makes sense about the octatrack if it's primarily a sampler.
The DSP lover in me would be OK with a resampling workflow,
but I think maybe the Yamaha rm1x would sequence my Q pretty
nice. 16 channel, polyphonic, pattern chaining and song
arrangement I feel lush just thinking about it.

Ironically a large part of my motivation is that my Macbook
broke and so I've been using Cubase VST 5 on an iBook
running Mac OS 9 to record.

I COULD sequence my gear from it. I have more than one USB
midi interface. I've had the ability to sequence midi from
a computer for 15 years tho and there's a reason I barely
dabbled in it. Always latency or sync problems or some
other wonkiness, or it just won't play the sound. Now using
a midi controller for softsynths? Absolutely, it works. If
I had Maschine or something I might feel differently who
knows.
