Your taste in music

How much do you think your taste in music is conditioned by
the social class you grew up in? Do you look down on people
who listen to dumb dance music (i do)?

Do you think techo and dance music in general is the music
of the lower classes, because it is functional? It serves a
function, to make people dance. It has no value on its own
(yes even braindance)

I posted a torrent to a huge archive of electroacoustic
music, a few months ago. You proles didn't listen to it. You
are still wanking it to Autechre or whatever.

To chime in on this thread with a somewhat real answer.....

In my life experience, it seems "upper class" listen to
dance and other pop forms of music most. Like they'll have
their ridiculous sound systems with pointless $500 cables,
to listen to Earth: The Best Of vol.XXII. But pop dance
shit is popular amongst the hyper privileged, because it
speaks of the idealistic hedonistic lifestyle that they're
used to.

Middle and middle-upper tend to have the best sense,
possibly because they've tasted the type of hardships that
build character and require deep soul searching and insight,
which for some reason- combined with higher than average
intelligence- results in being able to come across good
music. Fucking every electronic music forum is basically
privileged kids having breakdance battles where nobody
loses.

"Lower class"- the truest of those people-- dude, they are
so focused on just getting food, that they cann't give a
shit about music. Their life is dramatic music enough.
That being said, in Egypt the "ghetto people" listen to the
most phuture shit; a mix of traditional Arab rhythms
+electronic/hip hop influence and auto-tuned lyrics, that is
looked down upon by the people who can afford a Benz like
nothing.

So to answer the original question, my musical tastes have
definitely been assisted by my "social class". When I grew
up in ze City of Angels, my tastes were primarily pop. But
then I went to boarding school in HI and international
school in Tokyo, where I was introduced to so much new music
from different cultures that it was like oh fuk, the music
world is vast. So being surrounded by smart mofoz with
eclectic tastes-- my current musical world is in dept to
their influence.

And I no longer have shit thoughts towards people who enjoy
mindless dance or pop music. I used to. But I feel it's
all good now- if it's helping people ENJOY LIFE, that is
100% a good thing. Not everybody wants deep shit when
listening to music. Life itself is a trip.

I grew up in a rich social democracy (Norway) with a dad who
made a lot of money working off-shore but who was always
overly careful with the spending of any of it and very
determined that his children should learn what it means to
actualy EARN your money. He had a decent enough sound
system, but a somewhat limited music taste, but never the
less he has been an inspiration to me, musically in some
strange way. Maybe the passion he displayed for the music he
liked - often after a few drinks - was something I
recognised in my self...only difference was that I had to
look very hard and long to actually stumble upon - often by
chance - the music that arouse such passionate feelings
within me. Exclusive music. Unusual music. Music that no one
had heard of. Music that defined "me". Music that made me
feel special. I soon turned into a musical "snob", and I
still am and feel good about being one. I like all kinds of
music and I have really expanded my range of it over the
years. I feel that I have more authority when it comes to
judging something as good or bad music, simply because I'm
more passionate about it than your average upper class,
middle class or lower class "Joe". So what this boils down
to, I guess, is that musical taste is more a question of
psychology than of class. Unlike my father, I'm terrible
with money, but I'm absolutely fucking awesome when it comes
to music. Just take a look at my youtube channel, and you'll
see what I mean: LAZY_TITLE

Pop music is for the lower & middle class, or is it? I
didn't grow up listening to classical music or reading
sophisticated literature.
I look back and see what media my family consumed, and this
makes it clear, i am a member of the working class.
It is very good that nowadays people have access to all this
stuff for free on the internet, be it books, music or
movies.

Pop music is pretty powerful, and it can be used for
positive means. I would one day like to use pop music
outside of major label means, to spread THE ULTRA MESSAGEZ.

Imagine if the musics that hundreds of millions of people
know... imagine if they had deep positive messages.
Everyone would be ninjaz and levitating and shit. Instead
the past 30 years have been concerned with being cool at the
cost of recklessness.

Anyway, I suppose the boom of EDM is "good", cuz it brings
people together. Candyflipping needs to become more popular
to spread ancient knowledge, though.

Pop music outside major labels has been done. Take Saint
Etienne, for instance. I always say that if there was a
Nobel Prize for pop music, they should have it. Pop culture
is a great historical resource anyway. Romantic, sure, but
still invaluable when it comes to give you a real feel of
the zeitgeist of ay given era. What jnasato is talking about
is what we call "propaganda".

Pop music applies to all classes.

But psychology I believe plays a bigger part to what music
people listen to rather than their class. For example I take
myself... I have not met one single person who also enjoys
listening to Coil, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic T.V, Current
93, or the many other groups and acts in the Industrial
umbrella like I do. I believe it to be a psychological thing
just like Monte Cazazza said back in 76' "Industrial music
for industrial people".
