I want to buy me a nice gift and was thinking about a
sampler/sequencer like the mpc 5000..any one here who uses
one? Or do you have other suggestions? I want one that
stores all samples and songs and can be used as a stand
alone device..it must be the core of the set up..

Lol...so you think it's easier to use a software sequencer
f.e. ableton instead of a hardware sequencer?

yeah, with a daw like ableton you can sequence it however
you want. piano roll, recording keys/pads, using a
controller like Push which is ten times more powerful than
any MPC, building your own sequencers in Max4Live...

not being totally serious tho. MPCs are very cool in their
own right. I've had like 3 1000s over the years. you can
expand it with an internal HDD, so it can probably store all
your smaples. with the JJ OS (I'd never use an
MPC1k without) you can also record entire tracks right on
the machine itself, use the sampler as a synth with LFOs and
everything, sequence in grid mode as well as step and live
recording etc etc. I used a midi keyboard with it to record
melodies, and used the MPC as the centerpiece in my studio
controlling external synths and other samplers etc. etc et c
etfcce.

never used any other MPC, but the 2500 seems evern better if
you need more ins 'n outs. don't really see the need for the
5000, and the 500 seems too basic for my taste.

Software on good computer = can do anything you can imagine
with basically no limits

Hardware = fuck looking at a computer screen, this shit is
on my lap, and I can sit here for hours making tracks and
tweaking shit and getting involved in the OS and creating
original workflow and using on-board limitations to boost
creativity, which will ultimately give me more brain-power
and IDM action, which might also improve my jumpkicks 23%,
and since this hardware is not hooked up to the internet I
won't accidentally spend my musical inspiration passion
hours hanging out on reddit and facebook

Computer setup is basically ANYTHING, but a dedicated
hardware unit is actually an instrument in and of itself and
should be thought of as such. Like instead of buying a
piano or guitar or drums, you could use a DAW. But an MPC
or groovebox or raveolution or whatever, those are
instruments, like a guitar. Much more fun and can often
have unique flavor.

But a sampler might not be so much fun without synth
capabilities, so something that can sample and has as synth
is good for general musics.

Well, I've only owned/used the all-in-one boxes of
yesteryear, so like Roland MC-505 + SP-202, which is
basically the MC-808/909. ...MC-303, Yamaha RM1x, Korg
Electribe series, yah those old school stuffs...
Prooooobably newer stuff like OP-1, Machinedrum, uh- more
"new potential".

I really loved my MC-505, though, even though I could push
it to crash... I could sit easily for hours with it on my
lap with no head fatigue like computer screens give you. I
love modern DAW tech, but I am sort of sick of looking at a
computer screen and using a mouse.

When you got some hardware on your lap/desk, the whole OS
becomes part of muscle memory, so you eventually use the
machine by clicking around in every function with FINGERS,
knowing exactly what is what-- you barely use your eyes, so
your hands become one with the machine... with much more ear
listening, instead of eye focusing. Shit actually gets done
fast, WITHOUT A MOUSE OR LARGE SCREEN. Amazing, simple
shit. Love it.

Click the machine on, produce. None of this having to start
up a supercomputer that can render Jurassic Park in
real-time just to write music.

How about the Roland MC 909? Seems to have it all packed
into one.

You sound like a nice friend, crazone.

I think retape convinced me to use my computer as the base
for my home studio, I've set it all up again and its
running. I use an old version of ableton, live 5, the
Yamaha Rm1x and su700 sampler. The push is something I
consider know as an option to buy, problem is you don't get
the full version of ableton with it, just an intro version.
For now I'm gonna focus on making one song with the
equipment I've got and see if it fulfills my needs, if not
I'll probably gonna buy me push. I'll keep you posted my
friends, thanks for your help!

I've found that as long as you have an idea or inspiration
for a track, the tools you use to make it doesn't matter.

however, if you're going in clueless, having some fun
hardware to jam on can potentially (not always) spark an
idea

or something
happy new year!

Suddenly I remembered I already have hardware that works
fine, I don't have the zip drive for the su700 so maybe I'll
be spending my money on that.

I have a MPC1000 (with JJOS1 - essential) and it's a pretty
nifty box, but certainly NOT a computer.

The best/worst thing about computers is they can do
anything. The big trouble is they need updates, get viruses,
suddenly stop working (ok "hardware" can too but seems less
fragile), etc.

The computer has the internet, so you will end up clicking
on that bloody icon and wasting time or getting distracted,
or playing a game or whatever.

Best thing to get is a little fun to use box that gets you
banging out little tunes then use the computer to polish
it.
A MPC could do that, or a simple x0x style step sequencer
driving a synth, or who knows - the key is it should be
simple and fun to use.

I've got a Boss SP303 and it is such an absolute JOY to use,
even though it is very limited. One of the newer Roland/Boss
boxes might be good. I have seen vids of the SP555 and it
looks great, however bear in mind that most of the
operations will be done "by ear" rather than on a MPC where
you can arrange things "by eye" on the screen as well.

I feel that the SP series are aimed more for DJs than
producers but really it depends on the person. A SP303 is
perhaps comparable to a SP12 or SP1200 (never used them) but
I know in the 80s loads of fairly simple hiphop tracks were
done on them but then the MPC came along and rightly blew it
out of the water.

What is my conclusion?
Well, I think MPC1000 is a great thing to have providing you
get the JJOS.
SP series are also fun and actually even using them just as
external fx is well worth it.
Both are great at certain things. If my house burnt down and
I could only afford to buy one I do not know what I would
decide - head says MPC but heart says SP303 (or I suppose
the SP555 these days).

There are other gizmos out there but I don't know how good
they are. The fact I didn't buy them is a good sign I don't
rate them highly - but that's just my opinion.

native instruments is all you need. never get the people who
buy hardware in 2014 (especially for ridiculous amount of
$$$).

pirate that stuff and buy a hot hooker instead.
