A bunch of people I know serve in the military. Their families swoon over how heroic they are and how we all owe them a huge debt. But do we? If they were actually defending my home turf from a hostile invasion, then yes I would be indebted to them. But they're not - they're just sitting about in bases and sometimes fucking off to Afghanistan to perpetuate the dubious campaigns there. You might say that, if there was a hostile invasion then they'd be the ones defending me from it, and so I owe them something for that. But if there actually was a hostile invasion, I would enlist myself. So they don't really have much of a moral highground there either.
Sure, when they are in Afghanistan they see some nasty shit and put up with a lot of crap. I empathize with them for that but in a "sorry you have to put up with that shit, you poor bastards" way, not in a "wow you're such a hero" way.
