Hello there,
Elecronic Dance Music... the term just feels a bit vast. Some exec or what have you probably came up with it to create a buzz. A new name to put on compilations. As if some new style had appeared.
All it is is a box encompassing many smaller boxes, with smaller boxes inside those boxes etc..

I've never quite worked out what EDM is actually supposed to be. Is it literally just any electronic dance, or something more specific? And does it matter? (rhetorical)

edm is the new house. house was the sucky crappy shitty techno that frat douche gay homos listened to twenty years ago. now that kids who were barely born twenty years ago are of age, since they never heard house apart from old people mentioning it, they just rebranded it edm so they can feel like they are a part of a new underground movement but they're still the same frat douche gay homos.

EDM and IDM can basically hold any genre under their label power, but IDM does have the distinction of being able to hold quite undanceable music under its retarded umbrella. EDM focuses on the D, and IDM focuses on the I. Ideally both would focus on the M, but then there'd just be a genre called "Music" and people would think that's too broad, even though it's saying as much as EDM or IDM.
EDM=nu-house-and-or-breaks
But in reply to OP, yah, current times are much like mid-late 90's, where underground shit got mainstream attention and then electronic music became popular as a mainstream medium. In that sense, now is probably the best time for any skilled underground producer to sell the fuck out, make some shitty catchy shit, and actually make some money out of the game.
