I didn't find him very convincing.

He was right that in the Middle Ages the Islamic
civilization played an important role in the development of
modern science; and he was right that there's not only
Islamic anti-semitism, but Christian and European forms of
anti-semitism.

BUT I thought the "challenge" or rhetorical question with
which he ended his speech wasn't that good. "If Islam is a
religion of war, then why is it only a minority who is
committing acts of violence in the name of Islam?"

That question makes it almost sound as if - once a person
adopts a religion - he will put the teachings of the
religion into practice. However: Of course a person can
accept the teachings of a religion, but fail to put them
into practice (due to his weakness, for instance). One can
identify as a Christian but despise one's neighbor or
identify as a Buddhist and fail to follow the eightfold
path. So one can't make such a simple inference from the
behavior of religious people to the "core" of a religion.
One can't argue "The majority of Muslims is peaceful,
therefore Islam is a religion of peace". I guess one would
have AT LEAST to look at the behavior of the followers of
the religion in the context of the central texts of the
religion in the context of the social and political
situation in which they are in. (Of course something you
can't do in 10 minutes.)

His point that "there's no sharia law" because there's not
one definite form of sharia law, is also rather poor. It's
not the case that there's NO sharia law, it's just that it
has no absolutely definite form.

And the claim that the majority of suicide bombers are NOT
driven by Islam - even if they themselves say so - is a bit
ridiculous. If a person commits an act of violence and the
person himself cites his religion as the cause of his act
then the religion will have SOMETHING substantial to do with
the act. (What exactly the role of religion is is open to
question. But to deny that it plays any substantial role is
ridiculous.)

Christians and Christian civilization aren't generally given
to lone wolf or small group attacks (though this is arguably
changing with Breivik et al). Christianity attacks en masse
under the aegis of a national regime, occupying and
destroying entire civilizations.

This collectivization of violence puts some space between
the acts on the one hand and the ideologies of the
individuals involved on the other. This appears to decouple
the acts from the motives and the ideologies of the people
taking part.

It's sort of like a drone killing can seem less brutal and
unethical than a stoning because of the nintendo-ization of
the process, the alienation of the act from the person
committing it.

I'm not a pro-muslim or a hater or lover of any kind of
religion but I do think every religion in it's core is
good..it's the people who fuck it all up..

Mehdi Hasan writes for the Guardian, some of his stories
have seemed a tiny bit sketchy to me

sorry about the reverse psychology actually. i really
dislike this mehdi guy.

- islam is not peaceful (at the moment). Ayatollah Ruhollah
Khomeini is hardly the fringe of islam (extreme yes but not
fringe) when calling for the death of Rushdie.
- Rushdie's fatwa is still not lifted.
- many people were killed by islamic mobs/attacks in
response to Rushdie's book.

this was not an act against occupation from foreign
democracies. this is not resistance to western interference.
its also not peaceful. it's also not secular. this is
islamic

i use this example instead of the terrorism which is clearly
nurtured by modern islam only because of the argument people
like mehdi respond with. mehdi is bad because he should be
talking about this problem honestly.

so islam is bad ok. but im way more interested in the
reverse thing.

here are examples of Reverse:

- 9/11 was 'our' fault.
- west is decedant and we deserve destruction
- anything but christian

theres a weird masochism here boys. dont tell me you didnt
feel sexy when the trade center exploded cos you did.

Many people who hate the West - and think it is in essence a
decadent and hypocritical civilization - used to have a very
positive - but very naive - view of Western countries as the
proponents of enlightenment, freedom, universal human rights
and so on.

Then they come to the point where they realize that their
view of the West was false (because it was just TOO simple
and too incredibly naive).

And then - rather than modifying their worldview in a
sensible manner, so that they accept that the Western world
is far from perfect, but has made great genuine achievements
- they go the other extreme. Then they believe that the
Western world is simply rotten to the core.

At least I could observe a couple of people who went through
this process.

It's incredibly idiotic

Breivik didn't really kill people for Christianity though,
but for Norwegian/pan-European nationalism?
