for $50 I wouldn't get my hopes up to get a decent pair of
headphones for production.

AKG 601 are pretty good. they will cost you between 150-200

if you just want to spend around 50-60 bucks for some decent
headphones, there are 3 pairs that are worth mentioning, for
(rather portable) listening pleasure. mind they are not made
for mixing nor production, but probably the best sounding
headphones within a 100 bucks price range
these are:
AKG k450
Sennheiser PX 200
Koss Porta Pro

have had the AKG and the Sennheiser, which both sound ok,
AKG have more bass, mid-range and a wider more divided sound
and thats the one i prefer.

if you want a really accurate sound for production you have
to, as isnieZot said, look around 150+ price range, AKG,
Sennheiser or Audiotechnica ATH-M50 (170€) for example.

at that price range you're better off just worrying about
comfort imo, you're not gonna really find anything with
sound quality that's going to keep you coming back.

I have some bright yellow WESC ones. They're certainly good
enough for the job. Plus they're yellow!

Thanks for the suggestions... I don't need professional
phones per sey, quality is important though. I like a
circular over-the-ear design with a straight band that don't
leak sound.

I had some sennheisers, but the band was crooked and the
ovular earpieces made my ears start to fall off (HD497 i
think). anyway, the akgs don't look too bad.
