Lets talk about taste. Do you really think that top 40 music, is good music? Do you really think that alternative rock is good music? Do you really think that IDM is good music?

Music is all very perceptive. To me, good music is anything that fills the listener with the intended (or unintended) emotions. For me, listening to top 40 elicits no emotional response.
Music like progressive rock, IDM (as well as other electronic music), and classical minimalism all feed into very different but equally important parts of my emotional being. When I feel more connected to the artists that create these works than people I converse with in everyday life, that is when I know I'm listening to good music.

What kind of connections are those? What kind of needs do you think music fullfills?

The connection to me is a deeply emotional connection. When I'm listening to music that I really love, I feel as if I know exactly how that artist felt when writing that piece of music. It almost feels empathetic, in that another person has experienced the same emotion as you.
Again, I think the needs that music fulfills are emotional ones. As I mentioned, feeling a sort of empathetic connection to someone you have probably never even met is something special. Relating one's heart and soul to another through sound is incredibly beautiful.

that's where the art pops in.
On topic: 'good' music is only subjectif isn't it? But I do believe that I listen to good music most of the time

So, we are talking about emotional responses. Well, most techno for example, is pretty monotonous. Do you think people who enjoy this kind of music are emotionally not very well developed?
Maybe they even have a bad character? I recently listened to a talkshow where some musicologists discussed classical music, or whatever it was. I think thoses people wouldn't think much of most electronic music. (Not that I care or anything)

I don't like that quote either. You see if you just think you can consume art on an emotional level, without any intellectual 'work' you are missing out a lot.
It takes maybe a bit understanding in the historical, philosophical or political aspects of the artwork or art itself to really find a better access to it.
