i've heard that coming out as an atheist is social suicide
in the usa. even worse than coming out as a gay, lesbian or
transsexual. ... is that true? or was that european
anti-american propaganda?

I would classify atheism as a religion. It is a
belief that no gods exist. They attempt to present
it as the default natural conclusion based on what can be
proven, but that it like saying that the deepest sea
creatures didn't exist until we were able to get down there
and verify them. Agnosticism is the only honest, objective
position if you are going to base it solely on what we have
proven or not proven so far.

Most people know what you are trying to express. Try being
concise

Atheism is not a religion.

i'm so 2006.

the whole situation in this topic is just honestly
disturbing/wierd for me. no offense though.

it's just that i simply cannot imagine attending a "casual
atheist meetup". because i just simply cannot see what
people that don't believe in any good have to talk about. so
i'm getting this picture of a few people sipping their pints
clapping each others shoulder and saying "you cool bro".

the second thing is with the girl. the whole situation. "are
you an atheist ?" - this is where my alarm goes off. why the
fuck should she care if i'm an atheist. what will the answer
change. and also "i will give you my number" WTF ? if you
said you believed in the flying spaghetti monster would she
still want to talk about it ? if i meet someone new and the
first topic is religion i'm getting hostile as the only
people i met doing so (until now) were jehova's witnesses or
some sort of any other sect.

the thing is i'm getting extremely butthurt in conversations
about religion. as far as any other topic politics included
might have any positive output religion is something so
personal and subjective that there is simply no point in
discussing it.

also saying things like "atheism's better arguments" is for
me some form of ignorance lowering the importance of
religion to the level of a choosing a car.

a bitch from hell...

It's an odd concept for me, I must say.
Let me just indulge in some minor word manipulation:

Yesterday I went to the Philadelphia zoo and had a great
time until closing at 5, then walked to the restaurant
where
I planned to have the "social adventure" of attending a
casual christian meetup. It was really small and I didn't
recognize anyone so I asked the cute cashier if she knew
about the meetup. she said no and asked "you're a
christian"?
I said I was and then she said "so am I, can I give
you my number so we can chat about it?" WOAH! Then I
realized I was probably at the wrong restaurant and arrived
at the correct one an hour late, where I then had an
awesome
time chatting about Jesus with cool friendly people for
two hours. I couldn't have imagined the day could go this
well!

@ Jivver: a single, medium-sized paragraph is actually
pretty good for me.

@ Dag. I'm not disappointed. When I was young I went to
church with family, got older and got out of it. Was
actively against it for a long time. Now I believe it.
Maybe that will happen for you, maybe not.

There is a facebook group I post at called Alfalfa Farmer's
Association, which is a spin off of the American Family
Association discussion board. Basically they are mostly
liberal atheists who discuss/troll on Christian boards but
made this place when they got banned/posts deleted. Check
it out sometime if you want.

I disagree. I think it's sound to say 'it's so unlikely
there's a God, I think there's no God at all'. (Also I
believe there's some definitions that don't exclude the
possibility of a God. But that say 'I don't believe in a God
until I see him.') Where I think some atheists go wrong is
to think atheism has something to do with theism, by being
the opposite and seeing them as enimies. Luckily most
atheists just don't believe in a God and aren't half
militant.

I don't actually think it is a religion, but of course there
are groups that are more anti-theist than just atheist, and
are more about active lobbying against the religious right.
I can't blame them always, the politics of the religious
right can come off as ignorant and extreme, but then so do
the politics of the extreme left.

I agree on your atheists views. But I'm skeptical about your
agnosticism claim. But it's no biggie.

i've watched a few clips of "the atheist experience". they
seem to be evidentialists. they always come back to the
point: It's wrong to believe in gods, because we have no
evidence for them.
(granted, most of the people who call there present
themselves as evidentialists, too.)

however: (1) more sophisticated concepts of god, don't base
the idea of god on evidence. .. before the atheist
experience deals with these better concepts of gods they're
attacking a straw-man.
(2) evidentialism is a theory which seems to be incoherent.
it's incoherent, because there is no clear evidence for the
view that you should only believe that what you have
evidence for. [and it depends on how you define evidence.]

blahblahblah.

You don't need to have evidence to believe in something. If
you want to debate that thing in a logical way, you need
some evidence. People are free to believe in whatever
nonsense they want, however if they want to convince someone
who doesn't believe in it that it makes sense, they are
going to need better arguments than are available. There is
no way to win or lose a debate about something that can't be
quantified in any way. Evangelists seem to think that the
fact that people can't argue their claims means that their
claims aren't correct.

There's a pretty good episode where they debate Matt Slick
on TAG.

I'd like to see Matt Dillahunty debate Plantinga on the
EAAN. (I like Plantinga a lot - he seems like a genuinely
nice guy and his arguments are challenging)
