I finally got this. It seem so overwhelming (but better)
than acid. So many things I don't were to start. Any body
got any good pointers or tips?

make your patterns vary, and non-repetative...

add in the occasional "oddly place sound" to mix things
up...

record knob tweeks in patterns...

sloots.

You mean sixteen channels with eight effect slots each and
four send channels is not enuf for you?

You can always mix down in another program.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2002-04-11 07:39 [#00167334]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker

Yeah, remember to keep track of all the channels you program
events in. If you loose track of one it can take hours to
figure out were you went wrong.

Speaking of mixing down in another program, what's a basic
mixer you could recomend? I just need to lay together wav
files rcorded with other software and paning and volume
controls. No fx needed.

nope, not enough...

fx are more fun to fuck with than actually programming and
synthesizing the sounds themselves...

i use fx on the sounds before i load them into FL, and them
poor more on...and then even add more when i sequence...

and a lot of times i can NEVER have enough bass, and
distortion...the sound has to be just right...

offline jupitah from Minneapolis (United States) on 2002-04-11 07:50 [#00167343]
Points: 3489 Status: Lurker

Well, I'm not opposed to fx in any way, but I make my music
with a synth with enough fx to satisfy me but it's sequencer
is quite limited. I don't mind fx, I just don't want a
whoppin piece of software like cubase. Something to take a
little less hard drive space and something a little simpler.

I'm lovin the sound of Floops. This is gonna take a minute
to learn, but It could use some more plugins...Plus I'm
happy cause I just got BOTH ventolin cds...

I use cool edit pro for mixing down.

I have cool edit 2000, is it much different from that? I
don't have any visual way of sequencing tracks with it.

Acid Pro is great for mixing down. The best I've used for
it at least...Any of the Acid progs are good for mixing
down. Which one you use would be based on what level of
mixing you want to do...

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2002-04-11 08:16 [#00167370]

Cool edit 2000 is the small version of cool edit pro.

CEPro has an Multitrack mixing pannel.

I use version 1.2a, cause it is dope.

aint it?

I'll dabble in a few when I get the time. Is Cool Edit Pro
very big? I don't remember what Cubase was, but I know it
was quite enormous.

Cool edit is big enough it suck dling it with a modem.
Fruity loops is 17megs. With a modem on morphues that takes
eternity...Course Acid is 30megs...

acid can use envelope technology with vst plugin fx to
simulate know movement.

let's say i want to make a certain kick line grow in
base...well i just incert the right vst fx, and add a slowly
growing envelope, and span the length of the growth from
point a to point b.

FL is much much much more than just a sampler....it comes w/
a couple of softsynths and is easily compatible w/ vst
synths and other plugins and such, so theoretically you
could run it w/ no samples at all.

Basically, once you get used to it and learn some of th
in-depth features, it's a startlingly nice program.

As for Cool Edit, it's not that big of a monster. Basically
just for editing .wav file with a simple multitracker thrown
in. Simple, but excellent.

The envelope technology you speak of, that's the only thing
I'm missing from the software I'm using right now. Would be
very nice.

Acid is not vst compatible. It is DX compatible, and you
need a VSTtoDx plug in thing running at the sametime, which
devours processor.

I can use Dx plugs in Cool Edit 1.2a too. As well as cool
edit plugins.

CEP2.0 will have vst compatibility I am sure.

On a wholey related note, Fruity Loops 4.0 is going to come
as the ability to use AS a VST plug in as well as with VST
plugins.

not vst...i meant direct x...

and envelope technology is not that fancy...a simple panning
of a track is just a volume envelope closing on the side
your panning away from. what's special is that acid utilizes
this greatly.

it.

yeah i use fruityloops combined with cool edit too - i
prefer programming to fucking about with fX - apart from
reverb for some atmosphere. but i studied the piano, so i
guess i am more interested in that side of composition. i am
also addicted to making percussion tracks ;) if you download
lots of soundfonts, then fruityloops is knockout - i hardly
ever use the pre-set samples - if only the soundfont editor
wasn't a fucking demo, it would be great!

bTW, use the piano roll, and make your patterns longer to
make it easier to have a diverse rhythm - instead of just
copying and pasting.

orion pro is good. although im experiencing some problems
with it sending program change messages to my gear. the
thing i like about it is the song lay out is better than
fruityloops. the pattern bars show as different lengths on
the layout screen unlike fruityloops they are all the same
little blocks. and you can drop audio tracks in and
visually see the wav data which is kinda neet.

there was a soundfont site..had blessed something in the
title (MSN search for soundfonts will display it), but it
isn't there any more! like i said, i will try and upload
them, but you will have to wait til monday - some of them
are fucking wicked! the orchestra one is magic, i have a
GREAT mandolin one which has BPM-matching tremolo on one of
the patches, some GREAT percussion soundfonts, organs
(great) synths (very great), good guitar fonts...fuckin
heaps - maybe i will post a list and you can choose the ones
you want uploaded ;)

I didn't say the envelope technology is fancy, just that I
wish I had that ability with the synth I use. There are
points in composition when I'd like to tweak a knob this way
or that, which I can do manually, but only one at a time of
course. Maybe I need multiple mice!

Does most everybody use samples for their drums? I pretty
much make my sounds from scratch, but it's hard to get some
good percussion sounds that route.

I pee on fruitypoops.
i never loved this soft. i never did something really
interesting weezit even if it's easy to use.
i used fastracker2 for a while and i found it 10 time more
interesting than "F-Poop"

I think acid is more easy and fun to use that "poopmusic.
there's no soft i can make music on like this one.

I love Fruity Loops--there really are no limitations as to
what one can do with it; only how-easily it can be done.
The sounds they give you are all really lame, though.
I love the soft synth though--great stuff if you know what
you're doing!

I did a remix of Evita when I was 14--it was my first song
on Fruity Loops.
I called it vel-evita (the cheesiest mix)
Named after Velveeta, the popular cheese, for those who may
not know it.
