New Job

I have a job in a residential care home. I am excited
because I haven't had a job since I have been at uni really,
not permanent anyway. But I am also apprehensive, cos I'll
be wiping old people's arses and lots of other stuff I
haven't done before.

My first shift is on Tuesday and it is 12 HOURS long! :O
Will be nice to have money eventually, though. And it is
good that I will now hopefully have a means of staying in
Brighton after uni ends.

Anyone here worked in an old people's home before?

If any of them die, see if they have a death erection.

Most people in care homes aren't executed (which is what
causes terminal erections), they die of natural causes, so I
hope I will see no terminal erections. ;) Interesting
article, though.

Yeah, that side of it will be nice. Also I get money, yay!

Thanks, I wrote that article myself. There's actually no
such thing as death erections; I just pretended to be an
authority and made it all up as a joke but it seems to have
caught on.

It should be the best payed job in the world: helping
people, a shame it's one of the worst payed! But a smile
from an old women whose butt just been wiped is priceless!

Tom Hanks gets paid a lot helping people watch movies. I
could walk laps around my couch all day but nobody will pay
me to do that because nobody wants that. Similarly nobody
wants old people, except for rich old people in the case of
gold diggers. If you want to turn it into a lucrative
business though, you might consider soylent green.

What would you suggest?

I will enjoy the job I think. Not great pay, but can't out a
price on job satisfaction. ;) Many people get paid a lot and
are unhappy, so... *shrugs* Also, I am young, so I am in
rush to lay the foundations for something I intend to do for
the rest of my life. I like care work right now, it's what I
enjoy, so I am gonna do it. The ironic thing is that
although I am doing stuff atm which requires a lot of
understanding, patience and tolerance, I don't have these
skills in everyday life really. Quite stubborn and very
irritable and tense. Or maybe its cos I just had some coffee
for the first time in many years.

hi Stein!

I think you would enjoy it. You seem caring and
conscientious and that is the type of person who should be a
carer. Also it is good to have high levels of tolerance to
stress and stuff. And if you don't like have any breaks in
12 hour shifts, it helps too.

Never too late to start! :)

"I don't have these skills in everyday life really...
[understanding, patience and tolerance]."

I add:

"Quite stubborn and very irritable and tense"

I bet this'll turn out just fine.

well, my old sister work for months on that and she told me
meanwhile it was a hard work. once time passed ,she seems to
have learned a really advantage experience for her future
days.

take care of money you get,and have good times.

It's interesting you mention the acquisition of life skills
when working in a care home, Falito. My uncles girlfriend
reckons everyone should do this type of work for at least a
year for the same reason- life skills. It does make you
think differently about others in a positive way, for sure.
What did you older sister do after working in the home?

Thanks man, I will try to take care of my money, though I am
awful usually. ;)

lol, well it had been more than fine so far. :)

Social life and working life are separate, my friend.
Hopefully the skills I have to make use of at work will make
me reflect on and improve my social skills in my personal
life.

I'm a conscientious person, but no one is perfect.
