"What was your motivation on starting the Analord series? In

those records there's a series of elements that we weren't
used to hearing in your last few records as Aphex Twin, from

Acid House to more rigid rhythms and breakbeats that aren't

over complicated. Did you have a concrete aesthetic for
these singles?"

- No, I didn't plan anything before starting to make them.
But what is true is that the tracks I chose to include in
the Analords were those in which I hadn't used a sequencer
that had a monitor or screen.

"What do you think of the astronomical prices that people
are paying for the limited edition binder with Analord 10?
On eBay there are people paying more than $300 for it..."

- It flatters me greatly.

"There are cheeky people there that say your intention of
publishing a record included in a binder was to have the
most expensive item in the history of the second-hand
market..."

- No, not at all. At Rephlex we made less money with that
binder than we do normally with a normal record. Plus it's
not released on CD, and today nearly no one buys vinyl.

Which reminds us, you've never had a series of so many
records published under just one alias, be it Aphex Twin or

AFX. There's five "Analogie Bubblebaths", two "Hangable
Autobulbs". But the "Analord"s there are eleven. Why so many

records in one go?

- I was starting to listen to too much digital music around

me, and that was starting to damage my ears. I wanted to
return to re-adjust the balance a little.

"By the way, at the end of this month Warp plans to relaunch

a CD of the two "Hangable Autobulb" singles? Why now,
exactly?"

- Because they've never been available on CD

When you released "Drukqs", one noticed you were quit
worried about the fact your music was available on the
Internet and was shared illegally by millions of people.
What's your opinion now about MP3s? Does it still bother
you?"

- I've always thought the music should be free and shouldn't

have copyright at all, especially art. Grant, my partner at

Rephlex, thinks in a completely different manner. But what I

think is that if you want to give money to an artist, great,

I am sure they'd be happier, but if you don't want to give
them money and to listen to their music free, as well that's

fine, because the fact that you listen to their music
already makes them happy. The copyright is more about making

money for businesses than protecting the artist. En any
case, the artists make better music when they're poor...

"Now it seems that there will return a grand explosion of
Acid House and there are lots of records coming out. Is
there an explanation for this?

- Do you really think Acid House ever went away? No, it
never left.

Much is said over your relationship with the Warp label,
and many rumours have been circulating: that you weren't
happy with them, that you're next album would be your
last... but you're still here. What can you clear up about
all this?"

- They're all false rumours, there's never been a problem
between me and Warp. Nearly everything I've read on the
Internet about me, the same as about other people who I know

personally, is completely wrong. It's great when nobody can

know you well because they don't ask. By the way, hello
everybody.

"After so many years innovating electronic music, it seems
that people keep hoping you'll suprise them, which for you
could be an unneccessary pressure that could affect the end

result of your music. What do you do to isolate yourself
from the comments?"

- When you do something new and fresh, it gets old really
quick, because always the same thing happens: people are
going to copy you, and that stops me many times from making

"innovative" music in that sense. So I try to limit the
amount of material that I publish and what I do is
accumulate a lot of material just for me.

"When you compiled the material for "Analord" did you have
in mind the DJs? They don't play your music often as it has

many time changes and complex breakbeats, but the Analords
are easy to play, say volume 3."

- Yes, they're much better to mix because it's material a
bit more repetitive and not so complicated. Plus, the sound

is more full than most digital compositions, and for that
they're more pleasing.

" 'Analord' comes from analogue, and also is the title of a

Luke Vibert track. In principal, the Analord series is made

completely from analogue equipment. Do you have a problem
with the sequencers and software?"

- Well, "Analord" is my word that I once told Luke. We're
good friends and many times we use the same words and we
both use a load of the same expressions. But the thing about

the analogue isn't true: I use sequencers all the time,
variety is the spice of lfe, my good friend.

"To finish with, do you think you'll shave one day?"

- I don't believe so.

"One last question. Some guy on ZL claims he met you at ATP
2007. A ginger fella. Tractern, I think he calls himself.
Did you really meet this guy, or is he just bullshitting in
order to gain esteem from his fellow XL-ers?"

-Oh yeah, that ginger guy who asked me if I was gonna play
the same set that night as the night before? Yeah, I met
him, he was neato! I am in contact with him via frequent
email. He is related to me, in a sense.

True, life is an integration of music, friends and
fun! And RFID chips and coca cola and evil and lulz.

I think its in Glamourama, a Bret Easton Ellis novel, but
rdj is refered to as "the Aphex Twins" in relation to being
on a guestlist or turning up at a club. Too much coke
