So Roger Linn and Dave Smith have finally released their analogue drum machine called "Tempest" to the public at NAMM! . Looks interesting, but costs more than your standard all digital jobby. Personally I think the styling looks gorgeous (shame about the blue LEDs, a pet hate of mine) and the videos show some interesting sonic capabilities, but I haven't really heard it being put through its paces. Who fancies this more than the Elektron devices? (OK, it's too early to say). I suspect Dave did most of the analogue gubbins and it may use Curtis chips like his other synths, probably a similar structure to Mopho (guessing). For a bit of background, Roger Linn designed the first digital (sample based) drum machine (Linndrum) and the early MPC sampling drum machines for Akai. Recently the Adrenalin guitar doodahs (I think they're fx units). Dave Smith founded Sequential circuits, making many synths and drum machines such as the Prophet 5 and Drumtraks before moving to Korg to develop the Wavestation and now doing his own things such as the Evolver and Mopho. |

wasn't it supposed to be called the "boom tschik" ? or was that another company. the synth itself seems rather uninteresting for me personally. first of all imho those pads are a weird idea to implement in a non-sample-related drum machine. a simple step sequencer would do and make the device more compact. the specs are quite impressive and i hope those few sounds out of this movie don't show it's true potential, because i could imagine making those on a simple korg er-1 with ease. as for the machine drum, that's a whole other league. when it comes to sound design experimental stuff there isn't another choice. i guess you could have that tempest besides your drum machine and help out with kicks and snares to add some more raw analog sound. |

Big fan of Dave Smith's synthesizers, I think this is the perfect package for what they generally do. Can't afford one, wish I could, have more important things to buy, like eurorack modules. Speaking of which, where are all the eurorack modules? I finally have a case, and nothing new to get excited about. Every single namm it seems like 300 new modules. This year, so far there are only three :( |

Yes the very first name was something terrible like "BoomChik". I've been following this for a couple of years now as I knew they would cook up something interesting. I think it can use samples in the digital oscillators, although I'm not sure. He seems to imply you can at about 1.20 in the video on the page I linked. I don't know how this would work, i.e. if these are single cycle samples like the Prophet VS waves he mentions or if these are multi-cycle samples, like a recording of a whole drum hit. I suspect it is single cycle stuff as with only 6 voices you could run into problems with long samples either voice stealing or blocking. The two rows of eight is a good choice for a machine which can do MPC and/or Roland style sequencing. It's not a huge surprise for me as their previous ideas had it, see http://www.rogerlinndesign.com/products/linndrum2/# The light up pads are great. My SP303 does this and I so wish my MPC1000 would too. Synth wise, it's an analogue signal path but has 5(!) envelopes and two LFOs. For a drum machine this is quite amazing. The VCA has feedback which might be like the evolver, if so this is great. I imagine some bits of this are digital, such as the envelopes, LFOs and delay line. It's a strange product in a way as it seems to go against recent developments and is almost a backwards step. You've got the Korg boxes which are pretty cheap, MPCs for sampling drum machines, Machine Drum for DSP drum synth experimentation and the Roland SP series too. I think Tempest is most like the Machine Drum out of all of these, so it will be interesting to see how they compare and contrast. I think the Sound On Sound review should be worth a read! |

You misspelled "monther". I think the Maschine plugin hosting will make Ableton poop its pantaloons. Using Live feels like doing taxes compared to using Maschine. Tempest on the other hand is a boutique product. Lots of people will buy it and I'm sure it's awesome but it's not destined to become the heart of anyone's setup the way MPC, Maschine or the Monomachine could. |
