Drukqs pianos

Someone mentioned that Rich used a dulciner or something?
What I've always thought was that he recorded himself
playing the piano from the INSIDE of the piano and like
digitally redid the sounds of it. What's a dulciner?

a dulcimer is an instrument played with small hammers I
think....

ever heard of a zither?
itz like this trapezoid shaped thing with lots of strings
going accross it
and you hold these 'hammers' which are like chop sticks
except bigger and the 'head' of them are fatter and they
weigh more
and you smack the strings to resonate tone

Rich should have a go at the Trautonium!

"prepared piano" is the general consensus. A piano w/
various things attached to the strings to make it sound
different.

hmmm that's pretty cool XLR, do you know what kind of
objects are generally attached?

yeah that instrument sounds really sweet. you could make a
huge avant garde piece with something like that. really slow
and really really off kilter with lots of echo. Im
drooling!!

A dulcimer is kinda like a zither, but slightly different.
I've seen them played a lot--sometimes they're played by two
people.

If what I hear off Drukqs is correct (the sound of piano and
that cymbal type sound), then that thing is the perfect
harmony of both melody and noise. Sweeet.

It's a very nice sound indeed. When I first heard it, I
thought it was some sort of japanese harp or something.
It's very unique.

Zen Storm, i'm not actually sure what he puts on the
strings, but you might want to do a search on prepared
piano. Someone else on the board can probably answer your
question.

The most common prepared piano items are nails and foam and
pieces of wood, but its something that you experiment with.
John Cage has catalogued all sorts of pieces and
preparations

a prepared piano can be arranged with any kind of item to
change the sound. running nuts and bolts along the string,
nails, wrapping wire around the string, fishing weights,
tying two strings together. its up to you really. no one
could ever perfectly imitate the sound you get unless they
knew exactly what items you used where.

i was even told someone once tried throwing nuts and bols
onto the strings and letting them lay loosely so that they
would bounce around while you played. i would like to hear
that.

So in essence you could take a piano and totally screw with
the strings? That's all you need to do? Hot dog that sounds
fun!!

Im going to re-learn piano quite soon and I can't wait! I
quit when I was like 5 or 6. I hope to have everything come
back and go "Ohh yeah...that" a few times. Should be fun.
Then I can get this prepared piano thing down and make
myself some ambient tunes.

ya to set the record straight its a prepared midi piano.
like a player piano but programed digitaly. then James put
various shit between the strings like combs, paper clips and
pieces of paper. He said in an interview that he played it
unprepared for a full year then started messing with the
insides

I think the piano stuff on DrukQs is poor, I'm really into
the insane drillish melodied bits on drukqs.

My brother is a classical pianist so maybe I am a bit
spoiled by good piano music 24/7, my brother (as well as
many other people lacking the genius of Richard D. James)
could write most of those tunes and play them better.

I like the piano on Drukqs a whole lot. The thing is I
don't like hearing super fast orchestrated piano peices. Im
into the awkward 'avant garde' (if you don't mind me using
that term lol) stuff...apparently like this John Cage guy.
The whole song is one note. I LOVE that sort of thing. Get
away from being proper.
