About the song... I rarely hear it "in America", but that
shit was/is played to death in Tokyo. I was pretty much
introduced to the song in Tokyo, and it played so often over
the years that I actually thought it was a Japanese song.
Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is Poo" is another
that they used to play to death in Japan.

In Tokyo, Christmas season is merely the playing of those
two songs on repeat, for every commercial, every tv show--
everything.

In Tokyo, people have money and spend it. And the modern
incarnation of Christmas is about spending money. So
there's that! It's more of a romantic holiday in Japan (or
Tokyo/Osaka... cuz in the country areas, everyone is riding
horses and picking rice on xmaz prolly). So it's a big time
to buy presents for partners and the like and go out on
romantic dinners, and not so much in the style of buying
presents for every acquaintance with a 5 month head start.

Christmas search in Japanese on YT

The above is searching for
クリスマス ("Christmas" in
Japanese). As can be seen (holy shit!), the 1st result is
Mariah Carey's track, 3rd is Last Christmas, and 2nd is the
Japanese song that they play on EVERYTHING IN TOKYO, just
like the other 2 tracks.

If you watch the 2nd vid... it's kinda old, but the image
of xmaz is still the same. Commercial for train system
stuffs... but as can be seen, the main image is romance and
not spending time with family, church, etc.

Is this a 'new' trend in Japan?

The 2nd vid in the above YouTube search has footage from a
1988 commercial, so it's been that way for 20+ years, I
guess...

I'm not sure if this track or or that Paul McCartney track
is my annual favorite, but it is probably one of them.
