Outside of the usual Mario, Sonics and Megamans
Good Platforms:
Super Nes:
Umihara Kawase Majyuuou (there's a translation patch somewhere) The Ninja Warriors/Ninja Warriors Again (not a platformer at all in fact a beat 'em up but whatever it's great)
Mega Drive:
Dynamite Headdy (best game) Castlevania: Bloodlines (best Castlevania of all) Rocket Knight Adventures Valis III El Viento Earthworm Jim 2 (or maybe the SNES one is better I have no idea)
Ghouls 'n Ghosts Shadow Dancer
NES:
Yume Penguin Monogatari Cocoron Gimmick!
Master System:
ZILLION
Some of those are more action than straight-up platform but I can't think of too many great classic platform games right now.
Anyway cool

This was maybe my favorite game when I was a kid. I recently started playing it on some emulator on my PC and got pretty far, but couldn't be bothered in the end anymore, I mean I already proved I could do it 20+ years ago.
It's still cool though, the music is still bitchen.
But it's gameboy, so I don't know whether that's cool for you.
