You know that pluggo runtime isn't supported anymore, right?

PC:
Synthmaker; Compiles vst plugins, comes bundled in
fruityloops. Allows you to use custom code and scripting
without having to arse around with making modules in c++.

Synthedit; The most popular vst compiler. Seems
everyone and their dog has made something in this. Not a
fan, everything that is made with synthedit sounds like a
casio, and looks like a geocities page. (not entirely true;
sonic projects made a vst in synthedit called OP-X and it
sounds amazing).

Mac:
Sonicbirth; Allows you to write AU plugins. No preamble
for this one, I looked at it when I was on OSX, and couldn't
be arsed.

Interface tools (PC only):
Knobman Make animated knobs, easy as pie. Works in
conjuction with
Skinman Make custom skins for your plugins.

Then again, if you really want 1337 seenster cred, you could
hand program patches in max/msp, pd, supercollider, reaktor
and csound. But those don't give you vst plugins, just
patches.

(If you want real 1337 seenster cred, learn cdp)

If you want SUPER1337 status, you have to handcode
your plugin in Notepad/TextEdit, then compile it with a
program you write and execute by command line.

I've made quite some synths in synthedit, and i have to
agree with the casio sound, so i've avoided that sound
entirely, then synthedit sounds quite great if i say so
myself.

Oh, and you can change everything about the interface from
it's looks to how the switches respond. Do some homework
first before you judge the teacher.

90-95% of plugins made with synthedit sound and look like
shit. If people put effort and time into their plugins then
they won't sound and look like shit. I am not judging the
teacher, I am judging the idiots out there that spend 2 days
whipping together a vst plugin and posting a link on kvr.
