sharing a hostel-room with weird / scary people

i'm interning in a foreign country at the moment. as i was
too lazy to look for a room in a flatshare / studioflat
before i came and it proved almost impossible to find proper
short-term-accommodation here, i'm stuck in a hostel now.

it's one of the few hostels where you can stay longer than
14 days. the problem is that it's full of complete weirdos.

the guy i'm in a room with talks aggressively to himself
"What the fuck? Wha' the fuck!? Jesus. Oh Shit." he rambles
on while he walks into the room and lies in bed at night.

when i asked him how long he stays he said "I'll be here for
a while." when i asked him what he's doing here he said
"Sorry? What do you mean?" I said: "well, what are you doing
here?" - "Erm, sorry, What do you mean?" he said.. "Are you
on vacation? Do you work here?" I said .. He said: "Sorry,
what?"

I just peeked into his bag .. it's full of pills and hiphop
cds.

what were your worst living situations? what should be
avoided in order to not get killed?

A friend of mine in Florida was anti-society and shit, so he
willingly became homeless and slept in public places. For
safety, he would sleep with a knife in hand, blade
perpendicular to his body (seriously).

So that's in regard to your last line, except it's not me.

Be safe by being cool. Overly-friendly might be perceived
as weakness by those who are willing to harm for personal
gain. But by staying cool, you form partnerships with the
good and bad.

But if worse comes to worse, just fucking decapitate some
dude and hold his head in the air and yell shit like,
"ANYONE ELSE WANT SUMMA DIS SHIIIT?!?!?!
FUUUuUuuUUuUCK!!!!!"

You will have no friends, but you might just scare people
enough to keep the peace.

I have stayed in a couple homeless shelters. Lots of scary
folk to be had there. Most unpleasant situation was when I
was lying down reading a book in a room of about 30 beds. It
was early in the evening so everyone was in either the TV or
the smoking room. There was this one guy across the room
smoking crack and masturbating while staring at me. I didn't
know what to do so I kind of just pretended not to notice. I
didn't sleep at all that night. When 4 in the morning rolled
around, I claimed my food-stamps and left.

about 2 hours after i wrote the message above, he came into
the room and made weird noises: "Ga-Ga-Ga-Guuu, Tschhhhhhh,
Irk Irk! Yo Yo! Sup! Krrrrrrrrrrrrrk! Sup!? Sup!?" then he
took some of his pills and was rather quiet after that.

any psychologysts here who can identify from which condition
he suffers?

i wouldn't be suprised if he's a male-prostitute. in the
evening he always asks for the time, then takes a shower and
leaves for 1,5 hours and possibly sucks some cocks.

he sounds like he has schizophrenia, the mumbling and
talking to himself is an internal dialogue in which he is
talking to various characters in his head.

does he make strange facial movements? does he seem
disconected from reality? or emotionless? those pills are
probably something like olanzapine or some other anti
phychotic drug to help him relax.

The good news is he is most likely harmless, it's a common
misconception that this illness causes violence or other
criminal activity, but this is not true.

You know what helps ease the tendencies of schizophrenia?

50 hits of acid on the tongue.

(jut kidding, just kidding- don't give him 50 hits of acid!)

he doesn't seem un-emotional, but slightly disconnected.
when i talk to him his eyes are usually really wide open
(but other than that his facial expressions are quite
normal). just right now he was sleeping for a while, then
jumped out of bed, started laughin and singing some R'n'B
song really loud and walked into the bathroom.

for a moment i thought he might suffer from multipe
personality disorder. because he often walks into the room
and says something like "WHAT THE FUCK? WHAT HAPPENED TO MY
STUFF?" or "WHAT THE HELL? WHO HAS TAKEN MY PHONE !!?!? HAVE
YOU SEEN MY PHONE ??". so my theory was that he puts away
his stuff, while he's in personality-mode-A, then switches
to personality-mode-B and thus doesn't remember where he put
his stuff. [further evidence for this theory was that he
seems to talk in different voices depending on when you talk
to him.]

well, he doesn't weird me out as much anymore as he did in
the beginning, because he's constantly friendly and kind
when he talks to me now. still weird, though.

does he suddenly start laughing at random times? it's got to
be schizoprenia, my brother has this condition and he does
those things that you mentioned. i'm sure he is not a threat
to you , just strange behavier

you can't diagnose a psychological condition based off of a
couple paragraphs on the internet.

It does sound like some mental health problem. It could be
schizophrenia or bipolar. I work in a mental health unit and
the vast majority of my patients have these illnesses. They
can affect people in a large variety of ways though so he
won't necessarily share the symptoms of larn's brother.

For example, some people with bipolar will have
halucinations and delusions and others won't at all and
might just be a bit grandiose and impulsive. Some people
with schizophrenia will be very violent and paranoid, as a
result of their hallucinations, and others will enjoy their
hallucinations and feel happy and comforted as a result of
them. A lot of the guys I work with are very emotional,
friendly, lovely guys; they're not unemotional at all.

I'm almost 100% certain he doesn't have multi personality,
because if he did he'd be quite likely to be talking in a
few very different voices, and each personality would be
very distinct from the others.

I'd say the pills are more likely to be a sedative rather
than an antipsychotic. Sedatives can be taken more regularly
to relieve anxiety, whereas antipsychotics are usually just
taken once or twice a day at regular times, to relieve the
psychotic symptoms.

As larn says, people are quite often scared of people who
act like this, but really there's often no need as they can
be completely harmless. However, if he does have
schizophrenia, and he is having command hallucinations, he
could be dangerous. You've not said anything to suggest
that's the case though so I wouldn't worry. Just leave him
to it, don't stare at him or laugh at him or anything. Just
chat to him as you'd chat to anyone else. If he starts
talking in a very deluded way, try not to feed into it too
much, but don't tell him he's talking bollocks either. I'm
sure you'll be fine.

While its fairly obvious he has a mental health condition, I
don't see how either of you can make any kind of 'diagnosis'
based of a few described paragraphs on the internet. Most
psychologists are cautious to try to diagnose someone, even
after several hours of discussion; in a situation such as
bipolar disorder, it could even take years. It could be any
number of things, and is most likely a combination.

I didn't make a diagnosis. All I said was that it sounded
like a mental health problem of sorts (as did you). I then
mentioned 2 possibilities of what it could be, not what it
is. With some people it does take a while to diagnose a
condition, yes; but with others, the symptoms make a
diagnosis fairly straight forward. Why do you say that it is
most likely a "combination"? In most cases people have one
main problem, such as schizophrenia or bipolar; not a
combination of the two.
