Autechre - Oversteps (a track by track glance)

It should be noted that with big leagues like Autechre, we
as fans tend to grow a somewhat convoluted foundation to
their future discography, expectations as to what their next
direction should be. Not what it will be. It has never
worked that way.
Therefore some of us are tarnished upon first listen, not
accepting the new world of sound Autechre lays out for us,
we're just too caught up in conceiving second take albums to
our personal favorites. We could not be more wrong. We are
overstepping the line between what to expect (from a
prolific artist that re-invents themselves each album) and
what we as listeners determine what the next step should
sound like.
This album is a testament to Autechre's critical fans, for
overstepping their sound.
It is, afterall, their sound.
So.. is Autechre taking my pun literally? Are they creating
oversteps to ours? We'd hope not after seeing other big
artists in the scene take long breaks after masterpieces,
only to release a slew of haphazardly developed eps and lps
that don't progress their evolution of amazing talent.
And with that, let us take a glance (not a glimpse) of what
Oversteps offers us..

01. r ess
Not a very convincing entrance. The only signs of the
typical ae influence is the recent decade of sudden
loudening and quietude of a synth line. The beat is boring,
an underdeveloped progression in the guise of Ep7
simplicity, without the sheer amount of nuances their basic
beats usually uphold.

02. ilanders
A distorted beat and uninteresting melody. Perhaps some
scraps left over from their Quaristice sessions? I prefer to
call that the junkyard era. Sifting for diamonds is not
usually what we're accustomed to after a formidable career
of full blossomed albums where picking favorites was
actually quite difficult.

03. known(1)
So much complexity. The melody is quite silly, in that
datach'i or netlabel idm artist sense, yet it's that weird
super fast squelchy sound that shows Autechre's true side.
That's probably why I love this track so much despite it's
medieval foundation. It's scribbled brilliance spread across
a piece of boring toast. Overall a very good track that
shows that they're still actually spending time on some of
their work.

04. pt2ph8
Sounds like Autechre from the present day making a track for
Amber's soundbed. I'm therefore not impressed. Amber was
amazing, but it does not excuse the laws of time. Autechre
have always been progressive in their career, so this cannot
be considered an homage to that era, it is instead a form of
devolution.

05. qplay
Quite boring to play. No signs of true effort from such
pioneers. This is something you could easily grab off a
netlabel. Anyone of us could have produced this filler.

06. see on see
Beautiful, yet at the same time nothing you wouldn't expect
from a magnitude of random unsigned artist's closing tracks
to their albums. It has a rich atmosphere of melodies,
synths, pads, reverb, and that old ae early 90s style. So
that begs to question, what is it doing on a 2010 release?
Yes, I'm overstepping Oversteps again.

07. Treale
Treale is quite amazing. It upholds their experimental hip
hop flow. I've nothing to badger about this track, it
succeeds in all regards as to what we may have not expected,
but weren't prone not to expect. So it falls into the
acceptable category.

08. os veix3
The only thing interesting about this track is that others
have told me it's interesting. I find it horribly bland.

09. O=0
About as boring and uninteresting as qplay.

10. d-sho qub
This track has quite a bit of life in it. Unfortunately,
it's not living on the blood of Autechre, but more so the
color Quinoline Yellow and Analogue Bubblebath water. Hard
to survive with that in your veins.

11. st epreo
What's this, an outtake for ilanders? Sounds like it.

12. redfall
Once again we're given an old style Autechre melody without
any beats or signs of progressive talent in the field of
melody making.

13. krYlon
Christ, just read the redfall review for this one..

14. Yuop
Boring shit. And a real shame considering that one of
Autechre's old trademarks was a stunning close to their
album. But this isn't a stunning album.

Autechre really haven't done anything interesting since EP7.
Going to give this album a listen sometime in the future,
but I am not really looking forward to anything I will like.

Are you saying that all art is beyond critical judgement? I
agree with this to an extent, while a review can not give
you an accurate description of what you will enjoy or
dislike about a piece of art a well written critique by
someone whose tastes are similar to yours can provide a
useful insight in to how the work has affected them. I read
Gwely's review and it just made me want to listen to the
album more because it drew such strong opinions from him. I
may not agree with his review once I listen to the album but
that it is so affecting has definitely spurned me on to give
it a listen.

But really, it's all just wooshy noises and stuff.

have influenced my personal desire to listen to the album in
any way.

well I disagree almost completely with the review,
especially since it seems to place emphasis on some weird
nostalgic references to the past glories, instead of
thinking about what the music is doing today. Also, I think
the album has one of the strongest closing tracks in the
history of IDM. In fact, the intro is pretty strong for me,
too. From beginning to end it flows strongly and smoothly.
But that's another review, I guess.

you asked if abstract art+music could really
progress/digress
technically or expressively

and my answer is yes
its not bound to, or obliged to, it doesnt always happen but
it certainly can progress or disgress technically and
expressively

at least as any other music or art

I mean the fact that it is abstract doesnt make it different
in terms of its potential technical and expressive
progression/disgression

Their live set will be amazing, doesn't matter that the
album is not mind bending like previous work, the live will
be some sickneing beats and cool sound... trust me their not
going to make us listen to boring 20 minute long arpeggiated
melodies :P

I stand by the comment in my profile. My problem with
current Autechre (and most experimental/academic music that
seems to be made lately) is that it generally speaks in and
of itself, and doesn't really attempt to create any kind of
connection with the listener beyond the fact that it is
cutting edge. This is all fine and good, and if thats what
you are looking for in music, then that is all fine and good
too. I have no grounds to criticize you.
