Hey i have this synth hooked up to my Edirol PCR-300 MIDI
keyboard which acts as a MIDI interface for my computer with
what i want to do with my DW6000.

Now, unfortunately the 6000 was wiped and the internal
preloaded patches and voices were erased, so i read up on
this and i guess you can either buy a cassette tape to play
the original 6 voices and load them that way, or use a
sysex-midi dump from a program on a computer.

So does anyone know how to use a OSX app like SysEx
Librarian to send MIDI through my PCR-300 keyboard to the
DW6000 and what i'd need to do to have DW6000 interpret the
MIDI data as patches?

Thanks for anyhelp in advance, i realixe this is probably
not even wirth the trouble becaue the DW6000 is really just
an outdated crap version of the microKorg but atleast with
analog filters.

here's some reference links:

DW-6000

PCR-300

SysEx file (2nd one)

i cant help you with sySEX, but you could probably just play
back the patches via computer if there are dumps available
online

i used to save patches from my polysix to minidisc (A&D lol)
back when i was a young lad

actually it should work "out of the box" just connecting the
dw-600 to the pcr midi out and selecting that port in sysex
librarian and just press "play".

i can't remember changing anything in my bcr2000 when
uploading sysex patches - the first few bytes should force
it by itself.

Yeah i don't know about all the pre-loaded patches and i
really don't even want them, but i know that the 8 original
voices are just waveform generations with one-period so to
act as a DCO? i'm not too sure i was hoping somebody with
some experience with these outdated synths could let me
know.

thanks though vlari, it sounds like a good idea to load
random soundfiles too and use them as patches like those
older synclaviers

so just turn the dw-6000 synth on and it should accept the
data as patches and save them?

There's no preparation needed in order to ready the dw-6000
for uploading this sysex file? Also do i need to have two
midi cables from bouth in and outs?

not really - connecting the midi out from the dw to the pc
would give you the option to receive messages from the dw.
there are sysex dump tools that are waiting for a positive
receive message before sending the next chunk, but you can
also just manually type in a specific amount of ms between
sending the chunks (as far as i can see in the screens of
the osx program there is a slider where you can change that
- change it to 250 ms or higher to be clear)

just for clearance - this will probably overwrite andything
you have done on the dw (presets, etc) so think twice.

i couldn't fing anything in the manual about a "receive"
mode in the dw. so as i said it should be sufficient to just
send the stuff right away.

i guess that when you start sending the leds on it start to
flicker or something.

you're saying change the 'pause between sending messages' in
MS slider to above 250 ms?

would it be easier to just find those OSC waveforms and play
them consecutively or would timing be an inescapable matter
to get correct.

i'm sorry but i didn't anything you said in the second
sentence.

sorry, i meant that because i just looked on the DW's synths
front panel and it has the OSC waveforms (8 of them) and i
was just wondering if it is easier to just recreate or find
those audio files and play them from my computer into the
cassette port in the DW, but then would the timing be an
issue (the time in miliseconds between each voice is
loaded)?

this synth is a asshole i'm sending it back.

sorry to hear that.

just to clear thing s up (if you still care) - this delay in
the sysex librarian isn't delay that it applies in between
the voices itself but delay between data-chunks that are
being sent from your pc. think of it like a usb connection
where you are sending a large movie and the same way your pc
sends one packet, let's say 10 mb, waits, then sends another
packet. this has nothing to do with the voices themselves.

okay but this is still buggering me - as far as new
wavetable synths like the waldorf blofeld or nord wave give
you the possibility to upload your own waveforms, i'm not so
convinced that the dw600 has. imho they are burnt
permanently and cannot be changed.

the sysex file you linked are just those 64 factory-presets
but not waveforms.

in the manual there isn't anything mentioned about deleting
or changing those voices also.

here's the ebay item link. I'm guessing maybe when he
changed the battery he might have damaged the synth?

LAZY_TITLE

There's absolutely no sound coming from the synth, and when
i tried to load the data tape sounds from my computer via
the FROm TAPE jack, the load function wouldnt work right, it
couldnt verify the sound coming in etc.

you definately won't achieve that with loading the sysex
data that you posted above - those are only preset files.

when i first tried using a preset sound before all of this
when i first got it, it did slightly work for a second, i'm
guessing there's a problem with the boards or something
then. Because i've been trying to re-write new sounds but no
sound.

is it possible that some internal battery is dead and it
just resets everytime you shut the synth off ?

nope that's definitely not it because it remembers the last
sound bank/parameters etc. selected before turning off.

I'm hoping the guy will let me ship it back. It never says
anywhere in the product description in the eBay item link
that it doesn't work correctly. So he should nice
enough to get it looked at while i ship it back on my
expense.

As sadist suggested, I think you may have fallen victim of
the korg DW*000/Poly*00 leaky battery issue resale syndrome
(it happened to me too). Sysex dumps won't really help you.
I would take the synth to someone who is familiar with this
issue and see if they could retrofit the motherboard with
the battery fix. Time is kind of precious here, because the
motherboard can be permanently damaged from the battery
leak.

i'm just going to pay the costs for shipping and get my
refund.

I wanted something purely analog from the beginning anyway,
so i'm happy i can use the money for something else.

There seems to be some confusion as to different kinds of
digital synthesis in this thread. The DW6000 isn't a
wavetable synthesizer like the blofeld, a virtual analogue
like the microkorg, and a sample based synthesizer like the
DW6000.

Wavetable Synthesis

Sample based synthesis

You can't just play the samples back into the synth through
sysex. They are permanently on chips inside the synth. Not
sure if its the case for this synth, but with some older
tech like this you can get eprom burners that allow you to
implant your own samples into the chips. Nothing online
leads me to believe thats the case with this one tho.

Fair enough. At your price range, I might suggest looking at
a sequential circuits six trak, or a mopho.

thanks for that mopho recc. it looks pretty versatile.

I have one, it sounds fantastic. Hardly believe that much
rich sound comes out of something a little bigger than a vhs
tape.

If you can muster it financially, I might almost suggest the
tetr4. But the mopho is very fun, and sounds ridiculously
rich.

yes i admit that i was calling it a wavetable synth several
times which it isn't - my bad.

this is one hell of a weird synth. i haven't heard of
hardware before that you can erase like that. what was their
point of storing it in ram instead of burning it permanently
into some chip. as there is no isntruction whatsoever about
changing those samples i guess korg didn't want people to
change the internal ones so why did they leave that open.

on the other hand - i found this movie dw6000 mod which
is kind of awesome

It was burnt onto a chip, but they were chips you could
erase and rewrite. I don't know why they did that. Maybe it
was an affordable workaround because ram being so expensive
at the time. In any event, you could get devices like the
prommer which would allow you to make your own sounds for
your drum machine.
