I read about that the other day. Sure is beautiful and creepy but the reality is boring/simple enough. I'm glad it wasn't extra-dimensional conqueror aliens coming through a warp portal.

somehow the fact that it turned out to be a rocket doesn't make it any less ominous as far as signs or omens go. in fact, if it were a sign or omen i'd say it makes it somewhat more appropriate.

the point wasn't really whether or not they exist. there was a lot of conjecture about this being a sign from aliens, or some strange celestial event, all with a kind of apocalyptic spin on what the meaning may be.
one of the most well known pieces of apocalyptic literature, revelation, has war explicitly as a part of these end times events, and has numerous symbolic descriptions that could very soundly be interpreted as bombs, nuclear fallout, etc.
that being said, of course i do believe that signs or omens can be given to warn of future events. for instance, was it mere coincidence that the WTC collapse happened before one of the worst, and possibly to be the worst economic downturns in history? this is as our congress just approved some 400+ billion in additional spending and our deficit is at 1.42 trillion. we are sending 30,000 additional troops into afghanistan at the cost of 1 million per soldier, and it will not end there. i am almost certain we will not leave that region before doing something with iran.
Luke 21:10-11 10Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

"one of the most well known pieces of apocalyptic literature, revelation, has war explicitly as a part of these end times events"
War has always existed and will always exist. That's like saying that a thunderstorm is an ill omen.
"was it mere coincidence that the WTC collapse happened before one of the worst, and possibly to be the worst economic downturns in history?"
Yes.
"there was a lot of conjecture about this being a sign from aliens, or some strange celestial event"
Conjecture from who? Religious nuts who would rather believe in some fanciful superstition than scientific explanations? Science can provide all the answers we need. It is time to stop quoting 2000-year-old fiction.

i recently got into some of this on watmm. someone wondered what, if any, historical evidence there was surrounding Jesus.
i posted what I thought to be a strong case. i am still waiting for an explanation regarding the passage in daniel 9, which predicts that the messiah would come, would be cut off, and then the ruler to come would destroy the city and the temple. i didn't even get into the fact that the "sevens" give an accurate time of when to expect this, simply because there is some debate about the final week.
in any case, jesus, a historical figure is documented as having a following in judea, supposedly performing miracles, claiming to be messiah, and being executed under pontius pilate. in 70 ad, titus destroys the city and the temple. these are all historical events, so how did daniel know, if not in the time of neo-babylon, than at least the 2nd century BC? (that is a hard date attributed to the oldest known texts found at qumran. )
here is the thing, you will find a lot of skeptical articles that will attempt to shoot holes in daniel, particularly the prophecies regarding mede-persia and alexander the great, but just set that aside for the time being and focus on this messianic prophecy. even with the later date being attributed to it, how would he have known?

nope, not a joke.
far be it from me to proselytize, but i have been a christian person the whole time i have been here (at varying levels of commitment, that is). lately, i have kind of been more drawn toward it, and when i see something like this it really makes me think. i posted a verse to show why i thought that.
then, when someone says my beliefs are 2,000 year old fiction, i felt inclined to challenge it. same as i felt inclined to challenge it on the other board.

i thought you at least knew me better than to think i was like sarah palin or glenn beck. maybe oral roberts, RIP.
a) i am not a republican. b) i don't think the earth is 6,000 years old.
also, i guess i wouldn't think anything of the rocket spiral, if it weren't for the 5,000 other events/conditions foretold to be part of these end times that have been coming to pass.
tell you what, you and i have been meaning to do this for a while. when i get home tonight i will make a thread and present what i got, in terms of evidence, (i may even proselytize a little). in the meantime, maybe look up daniel 9 and see what you think a possible explaination might be.

Its not worth trying to have a rational discussion with someone who believes that we were placed here by an omniscient being. Your beliefs are irrational. Someone asks you for evidence and you bring random quotes and conjecture about strange coincidences. Someone gives you evidence, and you reply with random quotes and conjecture about strange coincidences.
Nobody really cares enough to win a debate in this matter. You can't have a debate where the only evidence someone uses is centuries old mistranslations of things that people might have said 2000 years ago.

i'm pretty sure i gave credible sources like wikipedia and referenced secular historical data. did you read my post on the other board? i mostly used the niv which was translated in the 60s and 70s. also, i used the word conjecture first, and who gave evidence of what? i only saw people post their opinions, except for that campbell book someone posted on the other board. campbell is not a naturalist tho i don't think, he believes in spirituality just some sort of new age gnostic pantheism or something.
lastly, define "placed". i accept big bang cosmology and believe that genesis is consistent with it when you look at the very limited vocabulary of ancient hebrew. while i do not accept random evolution i am very open to the idea of template based speciation.
