I'm staying with my girlfriend who lives in Erdington. A few miles from the city centre, about 500 yards from Spaghetti Junction.

More a student on summer holidays but close enough :)
I haven't been to the Custard Factory for a while either. It's pretty much all dubstep in Birmingham now and a lot of the smaller venues around the Custard Factory are being hit with noise abatement orders due to there being blocks of yuppie city centre flats springing up round the place.
Also everywhere is fucking extortionate.

Nottingham is better. The problem with Birmingham is it has no decent mid-sized venues so you either have acts who will play the arenas or local bands. Outside of the city centre in the student area in South Birmingham is a bit better, especially if you're in to independent Hip-Hop. There are a few good Techno nights down there too. There are some fantastic pubs though, it's just that the centre is a massive concrete shopping centre and you have to go searching for them.
