WARNING: MAC 10.6 + ABLETON

i just upgraded to snow leopard (the new mac os x verison)
and my ableton 7 started crashing incessantly. turns out
this is a widespread problem, particularly when using the
complex resampling method.

ableton have said there will probably be a patch for 7 in
the future, but it's not definite.

just wanted to put that out there for anyone who is
considering upgrading to 10.6. fortunately i have a second
hard drive with a separate install of 10.5 dedicated for
working on music, but for now i'm stuck with working on
music at home.

no quirks with live 8 here so far. what do you mean by
complex resampling method? like recording in resampling
mode?

Traktor 3 with snow leopard doesnt work at all. maybe you
can play a few tracks, but try closing the program, and
you'll see an error message from hell. NI has no plans on
patching up T3 for SL

So they basically say "fuck it, not important" ? That's
fucking terrible.

i just recently bought traktor 3, of course now that traktor
pro is out, they've discontinued updates for traktor 3. i
guess that includes patches for making the bloody thing work
on snow leopard.

advice, when you found a version of OSX that doesn't give
you permissions/whatever issues just stick with it, unless
you really need it

when you have an audio sample in live, there are a number of
methods to resample/time stretch the audio. beat is the
default, then there's also texture and a couple others, then
there's complex, the only one which sounds decent.

This is why I get so annoyed when people think Apple
computers are so amazing and worth the expense.
Clearly they're just as crap as any other modern computer.

I think this was the peak of computer music
technology - that "just works".

i think "it just works" should be changed to "it just works
better than windows," which still very much holds true.
there's really no bitching with that.

it's just that apple can play the "fuck backwards
compatibility"-card from time to time. it's not that they
didn't warn people or something.

ohman, i just love reading rants about the
inferiority/superiority of a particular operating system

NEVER GETS OLD

apart from that , i didnt notice any odd things happening on
my system, mind you i strictly use pitch mode on ables. and
i've got a g5 to do the main sequencing, but i hope they
sort this thing out, that and the traktor 3 kinks. let's go
64bit everybody!

as a general rule if you're using pro audio/video software
and a new OS comes out you should never upgrade until they
have ironed out bugs and sorted out the updates

I still use tiger 10.4

Apple has made some mistakes here that they could have
learned from microsoft. Microsoft learned their lessons, now
it is apples turn.

offline Terence Hill from Germany on 2009-09-13 16:22 [#02325729]

10.6 is the result of Apple doing the exact opposite of
Microsoft's mistakes though, getting rid of old frameworks
instead of carrying them over to the next OS. This is bad of
course for anyone who uses older hardware/software, however
the list of stuff not working with Snow Leopard is actually
quite short. OS tasks (Finder etc.) are somewhat snappier
than with Leopard and there are a few usability tweaks but
all in all nothing too major, and there is almost no
software around that takes advantage of the new architecture
yet, so if you fear stuff not working, just don't upgrade,
nobody forces you. conclusion: Blech

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2009-09-13 16:36 [#02325732]

Well, regardless. What apple did here was release an OS
without giving much in the way of regard for what their
userbase actually needs the OS for.

But hey; finder works better. Thats awesome. In the vista
upgrade, I found that explorer had some functionality that
it didn't have before. It was also much more stable, it just
responded a little bit slower.

well dunno works for me. here's hoping for quite a
performance boost in upcoming versions of software that does
a lot of parallel math, i.e. imaging/video apps, maybe music
apps too (real time analysis and whatnot). It's all about
software companies putting the 64bit tech to good use now.

just took a look around, try Cmd+I on Safari icon, check
"open in 32bit" or something similar maybe it works
