best one has to be the mira calix version of iabpoitc. that
is a really, really good adaption. brilliant.

the lfo remix is quite alright, i like it when the bass goes
into rude mode.

The two Electroids tracks are pretty bad, sounds like some
youtuber doing a mocking cover. Luke Vibert LFO sounds nice
though.

Some of these tracks are beyond awful, i thought this was
supposed to be an homage, not mockery. Though Vibert's
lowrider jam version of LFO sounded alright.

So, "Chosen" is a 2CD set of songs everyone has heard a
thousand times and "Recreated" is a 2CD set of songs ruined
by other people. I'm guessing the tracks on "Unheard" are
unheard for a reason, and the box art looks like someone
reimagined Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" with a Moebius
Strip. Well done Warp.

offline Steinvordhosbn from London (United Kingdom) on 2009-09-11 10:48 [#02325109]

I had such great hopes of Ae's take on "What is House (LFO
remix)" ... hmmm.... sounds like they played it and slightly
fucked about in the background. What have they done? Watered
it down? Run it through a MUFFler pedal? I much preferred
Ae's take on the recent Black Dog mix. Does anybody in the
world want to hear Jimi Tenor? Vibert sounds likes he's
taking the piss, isn't there already a slowed down version
of "LFO"? Ovbvioulsy it was lacking a knowing Cornish
accent. Pritchard's take on the peerless "3/4 Heart"...
misses by several country miles. It's the same as the
Digitonal cod-orchestral version of "Hall of Mirrors" that
pisses all over the underwhelming B12 comeback. Fuck awful.
Mira Calix version, BORING. Quite like the John Callaghan
one. Born Ruffians don't warrant a mention.

Jamie Lidell doing Grizzly Bear, Seefell doing Maximo Park,
Gravenhurst doing Broadcast, Hodsom Mohawke doing Jimi
Tenor... spare me.

Guys with disposable incomes, there are better things to
spunk it on than Warp Box Sets and "AFX Promo Warp 2004"
only 500 no details clearly a bootleg.

What was in Mira Calix's head. Take this skewed pastoral BOC
track, iron out the uneasiness and make it accessible to
fucking Merchant Ivroy?

Clark, imagine being his mate and having to listen to his
new tracks. Imagin having to nod and agreeing that the human
ear should be able to put up with a lot more shit.

What was Rustie's (who?) thought process as he decided to
take the detroit sleek "Midnight Drive" of Elektroids, mix
in a bit of Aphex's 20 year old "On" remix (you know the
one) and then sit back and smoke a "doobie" whilst hitting
the "dub noise" key now and again with their acorn penis.

I congratulate Vibert on the massive effort it must have
taken not to add amen breaks, gun cultcha samples and
underwhelming acid, and instead play the original track at
half speed, add a bit of Speak and Spell and then ring up
Warp asking "Will this do?"

I had at least a peer of hope that some of these might
border on being good, a vision that seems an obvious dream
while listening to these samples: Pritchard's version of 3/4
Heart is a letdown to say the least and Autechres version of
What Is House (LFO Mix) severely missed whatever mark they
were aiming for.

I know what would be a better idea. You know like a DVD's
director's commentary. I think choose your TOP Warp tracks,
play them, record yourself going "Yes... oh this bit.. here,
no wait.... here... yes yes yes
SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK wakakakak" over
the top. We pick a compilation of the 10 funniest and I
think that would be a fitting tribute.

Warp 10 seemed to be a solemn look through a family photo
book, with 10+1 serving as the photos of the parents, 10+2
showing their babies and 10+3 showing what happens when you
give a child a handful of crayons with the order "go nuts".

Warp 20 seems to follow the photo album feel, "Chosen" is
the remaining parent saying "remember this holiday we went
on? Of course you do, I show you the fucking pictures every
day", and "Recreated" seems to be the new and old blood
being given a spade instead of a crayon.

The only good "new" music I hear rests far too heavily on
the recent past. I guess one consideration might be that
stylistic movements in pop moved very quickly over the last
20 odd years, and a lot of things got overlooked or could
have done with being investigated more rather than endlessly
ploughing onward. I think there is a lot of potential to
take elements og the past, don't be in such a rush to try
and emualte exceptional talents like Aphex and Ae, at least
not literally, but learn from their wide ranging knowledge,
experimentalism and mainly their playfulness. And don't do
fucking Acid Music like a retro tard. Like punk, it's an
attitude, not a fucking preset.
