mmmmm

will you be getting it? individual albums maybe? or the mono
versions?

i will at some point probably get this set. it looks good,
except for the fact that the cds are apparently stuffed into
those narrow cardboard sleeves. Can you believe they went
for that stupid design?

The Beatles, oh yes!

I was going to make a thread, a pretty big event in the
music industry really... i've been waiting years for
remastered albums, always thought the tinny sound ruined the
albums on cd.

I'll certainly be buying a couple of my faves, Revolver
definitely, probably White album and maybe Abbey Road.

Not really sure about mono, I thought most of the latter
albums were in stereo anyway, these aren't being released in
mono are they?

i'd highly recommend going to mono mixes.

the problem is that back in the day, studio technicians were
still learning how to mix with two channels. they thought it
was to allow for separation of certain parts so that they
would be more easily discerned on a home hifi. just listen
to sgt pepper's with headphones and you'll notice all of the
hard panning given to vocal and guitar parts - it really
gets quite annoying.

now we've figured out that stereo mixing is best used to
create a sound scape which more approximates the way our
brain interprets sound from two different sources, but they
didn't know that yet.

however, the same technicians had been perfecting the art of
mono mixes for decades at this point. the result is much
clearer sound, despite what one may expect. like i said, sgt
pepper's is the best example of this discrepancy - i found
bits of sound which i had previously no idea were in the
mix, and i went in expecting completely the opposite.
seriously, it makes it a whole new record.

All their albums except the last two (Abbey Road/Let it Be
are stereo only) are in the mono box set, and were/are
generally agreed upon as the definitive versions by the
Beatles and their producer/engineers. They didn't really
give a shit about stereo mixes, they were done after the
mono mixes with no input by the Beatles themselves.

It's hard to listen to some of the stereo mixes on
headphones and have the drums in one ear, it makes the songs
sound weak. Pretty much ruins songs like Lovely Rita, for
me. The mono mixes aren't as goofy and have more punch.

Anyway yeah, I'm getting both sets and I've been listening
to them for a few days now. It's nothing revelatory but it's
a decent upgrade and the low end got a much needed boost in
the stereo albums.

Stereo remixes are probably coming next year, with
reasonable panning. Actually I think the mixes in Rock Band
are new and not as gimmicky, can't wait for someone to rip
them.

ive been reading a lot of these mono vs stereo discussions.
considering i've never heard any of the original mono
recordings, i'm guessing there won't be too much of a loss
when just going through all of it in stereo.

why would this team of sound engineers go through all this
trouble to remaster everything in stereo if it weren't worth
the effort? would they or anyone settle for a less than
excellent final product? maybe i'm being naive here but
considering the very modest pricetag i'm not convinced this
is just a quick cash grab.

ophecks, i feel kind of bad. it feels like i stole your
thread but your input will save it.

you summed up my struggle to a T. i settled upon the stereo
box and i feel okay with it.

I think they probably did it cos they know most modern
record buyers would be put off by buying music in mono and
complain that it sucked even tho if you compare the mono +
stereo mixes the mono ones sound a lot better. and yes
People ARE that stupid

I don't think you're missing out by sticking with the
stereo. There's something to be said for the extra clarity
and more dynamic soundstage. Certainly their more ornate
arrangements have extra room to breathe in stereo versus the
packed mono. I tend to prefer the mono but it's more of a
lesser-of-two-evils thing for me, there's trade-offs no
matter what you listen to. Ringo just tends to get to the
shaft on the stereo mixes and that bugs me too much.

To me the one album where stereo gets a decisive win is
Beatles for Sale, crystal clear lead guitar that gets buried
in the mono mix

cheers ophecks. I was starting to have doubts about the
stereo box again. Another reason to get the stereo versions
though is for the fact that it has all albums. I could
always decide to buy separate mono versions later (and maybe
sell the stereo ones).

i did order every album except yellow submarine(who i dont
think is that good) induvidual today + past masters vol 1
and 2: 2009 remaster. was abit cheaper then if i would have
gotten the stereo box, the mono box was more pricey then the
stereo box.i dont care much for the extra stuff.
