anyone into avant garde here? of the classical sort that
is.

right now my favorite pieces are:

ligeti - cordes la vide (piano etude #2)
olivier messiaen - dieu parmi nous
kagel - renaissance

the thing i like about these pieces are the unique moods,
and the way they have actual 'hooks' in a way but that are
strange/atonal yet beautiful.

so im looking for more in the same vein. unique melodies and
surreal moods, either on solo or ensemble / orchestra.

any tips?

thanks behindthebeats! but i already know that site. though,
its a great resource, its also a bit overwhelming. i was
hoping someone had specific recommendations for composers
etc.

There's always more stuff by Ligeti.
Lux Aeterna, Atmospheres (basically the 2001 Space Odyssey
soundtrack), etc...

I think Moondog's avant-garde.

Bird's Lament

Viking 1

He's not very classical, though.

I'm currently studying "Sonatas & Interludes" by John
Cage... it's alright, he's done better IMO. Sonata 5 is
funky as fuck though.
