Drukqs

It sounds to me like it's probably been mastered on tape or
something of that nature. Every song seems to have that
particular warm intimate quality. but then again, I could be
completely wrong. Still my favorite!

The album is actually mastered pretty badly.

There's enormous sonic discrepancies between tracks. It
literally sounds like he pulled tracks from his hard drive
from completely different eras of his musical career, and
then level-matched them.

He might have intended for the songs to completely stand out
from one another. You don't dig?

I hear countless hours of hard work when I listen it's
songs. It could just be me...

the mastering is fantastic and probably one of the best in
electronic music. something like this should be the standard

I always liked the fact that you could make your own type of
album out of it. Select the tracks you're in the mood for
and let rip. It'll cater for most moods.

All of the drum tracks have similar mastering. Clean as
possible. Of course he used some different techniques for a
track like Besku3epnm because it called for something
different. I don't see how that makes for "bad" mastering.

I distinctly remember everyone saying that they hated it
when it was first released... only to find that the same
people admitted that they always had an unexplainable desire
to listen to it.

I personally don't think there's a dull track on it. The
outro the Cock/Ver 10 will always give me goosebumps. So
heavy, so maxed out!

I should point out that RDJ probably had nothing to do with
the mastering on Drukqs. That's Warp's thing.

Anyway, it's completely fine to have different sonic styles
and techniques on albums, and also, obviously, the MUSIC on
Drukqs is spectacular. However, some tracks have a
Fletcher-Munson EQ curve, while others have an "all high all
lows must be Bose" EQ curve. That's just not good practice
for mastering.

RDJ clearly has a knack for incredibly well-produced and
well-mixed electronic music, but I think the record label
did him a huge disservice mastering-wise for Drukqs.

though an Ortofon PW cart on one of those turntables from A
Clockwork Orange

see, that's where you're missing out

Would be interesting to see how much professional mastering
improves sound on the tracks. Like getting a track straight
up aphex studio, and comparing it with the final product.

Drukqs is well mastered, but it isn't that amazing. Don't
get me wrong, it sounds great, but it isn't something
extremely special. In fact, when it comes to sound quality,
aphex has always been a bit "not caring as much" (except
when he started to get rich, buying expensive ass gear) . I
mean, some tracks in the RDJ are literally clipping, same as
in SAWII. Some things have really nasty resonances. But who
cares, the tracks are still great.

pd: Also, at the end in Cock/Ver10 there is some weird thing
happening with the acid sound, like if there was no more
room in the sound spectrum and it was just fighting with the
other sounds in the mix, as a result of cranking everything
too much. This would be accused of "bad mixing" by some
audiophiles, but again, who cares as long as the tracks are
kicking ass and the overall sound is decent.
