So, I am moving over to the dark side... sort of. I am going to be investing in a 24' imac as my new computer music workstation. Secondly, I am going to be getting a semi affordable pc laptop to do auxiliary dsp, run the windows programs I am going to miss, and to carry with me to jam sessions & live stuff (if I ever end up doing that). Going to be looking at a new audio interface, so if anyone has any suggestions feel free to post them. I plan on using volta for a small eurorack modular I want to put together as my next hobbyist project, so its got to have good i/o.
Sold off half my gear, and upgraded a few things. I no longer have a DX7, Waldorf Microwave, Patchbay, Vestafire spring reverb, Multimix firewire mixer and xbox360. I know the xbox isn't music related, but I sold it to fund my new computer as I don't play videogames any longer.
The only synths I have left are my little phatty, mopho, and Ion. I would sell the Ion, but it kind of is the most substantial looking part of my studio right now. As much as my studio looking good isn't as important as it functioning well, it kind of hurts to see so many fun things going out the door in such a small period of time. Plus, its nice to have a 4 oct keyboard.
And finally; maxmsp. Going to go about learning this thing... a friend showed me a bit of code written in java that you can use to make an oscillator for max. It made a lot of sense, so I figure I might try my hand in it.
Thats all I got to say. I will post some pics when its put together. What are you other musicians doing with your setups?

If your mixing with hardware, then i suggest the edirol fa-101 it's a good solid interface at a good price, or the MOTU 828-mkIII if you can afford a little more. these both work really well with the mac. you get 10 in 10 out with both i think, well 2 of those outputs are digital, so it's like 8 analogue outputs
I'm using the edirol and it's a great little box, but the only thing i hate is having to turn it off and on each time i change the sample rate.
I did the same thing with my xbox 360, shame isnt it? i think we will get back into gaming at some point
You will find it strange using your mac and it will be a frustrating few days as you make the transition, but you will thank yourself later. which sequencer are you going to use? I suggest looking into logic pro 8

If I go motu, I am going to get the ultralite mk3... its less than an 828 and has all the i/o I need.
Had bad experience with motu on my pc, so I am not sold on them. Going to try out the midi interface I have on the mac. If it works as well as I would hope, then I can pair them up and use them in a single rackspace (I have a microlite).

I got the mac and an ultralite mk3.
It was pretty frustrating... still getting used to the inferior file structuring. But I haven't had my drivers mess up on me yet, which always happened with my pc. Its kind of nice.

congrats! i hope you enjoy your new mac
you can try using this
but did you know that your mac can zip and unzip files by default ? perhaps not all compressed formats mind you. if you right click on a file /folder you can archive it

winrar is pretty much the best compression utility ever. I've only used it on windows, but I hear the osx version works fine.
winrar homepage
version 3.90 beta 3 for OS X (this is the version I use in windows)
v.3.8 full (if the beta doesn't work)

Glad to be of help. You know, I've been using winrar for years and myself only noticed there were mac versions a couple months ago.
