Taxidermist mentions those in this thread.

really good!

Help a fellow xltronican out.

Yes, that's sounds, to my ears, really good. Or maybe I'm
just an amateur when it comes to this stuff.

Hahaha!

I'd pay money, though, if that was the actual beginning of a
film.

It'd be the perfect intro. No music, no presentation. Just
like it is. Beautiful.

kontakt 2 is the best software sampler in my opinion, and
this is a really great sample pack vienna synphonic cube

standard strings

your average bedroom musician can't afford these sample
packs, but if you look hard enough you will find them for
download

Ah. Times have gone by. Ages past since that thread.

Personally, I find good multisample sets are going to be
your best bet for realistic sounding instruments. Physical
modeling can only go so far.

Here is an interesting thread on Analog Industries about
Karplus-Strong synthesis KS synthesis
This is how some people get semi-realistic string and mallet
style sounds in their music. Seems like a fun practice even
if its not going to be very useful all of the time. Anyone
can do this with a few vst plugins and a DAW, or even just
basic audio editing software. Following the links can lead
you to other interesting articles about wavetables and other
physical modeling technology.

Insofar as to realistic sounding 'orchestral' tools;

Syntheway: make some synthedit plugins that actually do
a lot of good. Mixes physical modeling with samples. All
orchestral style instruments. I use magnus choir regularly.
Watch the interfaces though, they need to hire a
designer.

Soniccouture: these guys make *amazing* multi-sample
libraries of really neat things. Some obscure asian
percussive instruments. The bowed piano sample bank is
absolutely fantastic.

Eastwest makes a lot of good 'standard' mulitsample
libraries. Avoid Ueberschall; they seem obsessed with their
"elastic technology" which sucks the life out of everything
it touches.

Lot more stuff to name... maybe I will pull out my book and
drop some references of other good things, but those are the
names that stand out right now.

Symphobia is awesome for strings and brass.
EWQL is great for everything else.
Vienna I haven't tried much, but all my orchestral comps are
done in symphobia and ewql.

Larn: Thanks, man, I'll check it out!

Taxidermist: I just noticed that Soniccouture has a gamelan
library, and now I'm sitting here listening to it, and it
feels like a bolt of lightning to my head. I love this
stuff. I absolutely love this stuff. Thank you so much for
all those links. I'll check them all out. Again, thank you.

cx: Indeed, I'm still waiting for your 'blue strings'. :D
I can't find 'rachel's dream 1' on the computer, but I do
remember I was really impressed with the quality of the
strings.

Man, I feel I've been out of the loop, so to speak. I had no
idea some of these things existed at all. It's almost
overwhelming. I felt like punching a hole through the wall
when I first heard the gamelans. I need to get this stuff.
All of it.

Alright, so, first Kontakt 2 or 3.

Aargh, I need a break. It's X-files on tv. Yeah, that'll
do.

Thank you, people! Thanks!
