Long-Range Wifi Reccomendations?

I have a MB Pro and when i'm at work just in the office, i
can't pick up any connections, seeing how im in downtown
detroit in the market area. There might be alot of signals
even less than a mile away and i dont know what the range is
on the Airport that's built in. I don't think the Base
Station will suffice. I think i might need an antenna,
indoor.

I know that there are some computer-knowledgeable people
here, so please help. thanks

I'm having a little trouble understanding what you want. You
want to increase your range as much as possible so you can
nick internet off of other people?

i want to extend the range, but not to nick, i mean if
people leave a connection unprotected, that's their choice.
Like a local panera bread or something you know? i know
there's a starbucks like a mile away. But yeah i need a good
long range device for a MB that's relatively
cheap/affordable

unless your doin something on your connection that you dont
want your work to know about i guess

because the company won't allow it who i work for. but if
you mean to setup separately, wouldn't i have to subscribe
to an ISP?

that seems pretty good, except what about this one, which
one do you think is technically better? 40 bones

help me out

cantenna.

Basically a highly directional antenna to increase your
effective radiated power.
Doesn't boost the actual radio transmit power, but acts like
a magnifying glass. Equally for reception it focusses in on
the signal you want.
Obviously you need to aim it in the correct direction.

well as of now my airport gets no signals where im at in my
office. So i think i have to get an antenna that's has at
least a mile long range.

I've checked these antennas out, but they don't seem to
connect right to a computer, how do you get it to work with
your computer? do you need an adapter of some sort?
maybe this one will work? ?

Well, it might help. Omni directional means that it works
equally well in all directions, which is the opposite idea
to a cantenna.

The 7dBi figure is the "intrinsic" gain you get from the
antenna, i.e. the extra signal you get compared to a
theoretical "ideal" antenna. The more dBi the better.

Cantenna will give you loads of dBi gain but will make it
more directional. The two go hand in hand. Think of it like
a microscope, lots of zoom but only a small area vs normal
zoom but larger area.

Also, worth asking the people you work with if they can get
any reception. Could be the building shielding you if it has
lots of metal in its construction?

In all honesty, if you want a decent network connection, use
ethernet.

yeah i think it is the metal structure of the place, I work
inside a cold storage warehouse facility. My "office" i was
referring to is actually just a storage room where the
refridgerator is and all the extra hose, mops, all that. and
it's all got steel and metal infrastructure in it, but it's
a pretty old building, so i don't see that being a great
obsticale.

but my coworkers who use their iphones get good signals, but
i don't know if that's just a difference in signal type.
Ethernet isn't possible because there are no outlets or
"ports" anywhere in the area i'm in. No chance the boss will
let me setup a personal router either.

Mobile telephones use different frequencies to wifi and the
base stations transmit much more power than a wifi gizmo.
You're best bet is to get a 3G datacard for your computer.
That uses the cellular networks and is actually pretty
good.

The downside is it isn't as cheap/free as a wifi connection,
however they can be reasonably priced (need to shop
around).

wait, what's expensive, the 3G datacard, or the cost for the
connection with the datacard in? I'm not sure what you
mean.

I might just get an iphone but that datacard sounds actually
pretty perfect to what i want, cause i really dont need/want
an iphone.

Some of the tariffs might be expensive. My friend has one
and has used it to download oodles of gigabytes without it
being expensive. I don't really know enough about them,
having only used his one briefly. However, connection was
fast, he praised it and I seen general good vibes about the
things.
Most of the negatives I've seen are about the cellular
network providers being greedy, so best to avoid the costly
tariffs.

The very nice thing is that you can get high speed internet
anywhere you have 3G cellular network coverage, which is
very useful when operating away from home/work.
