The most mature suggestion here is Plastikman's Sheet One, a
terrific and terrifying album, in '93 the groundbreak for
minimal acid. It's one of my favourites, but acid lived
strong long before.

We can't discriminate history, all the less for its
supremacy. An acid top list cannot be regarded complete
without Phuture's '85 Acid Tracks, the tune founding the
genre, still the most extreme piece of music I've heard.

Adonis is a seminal producer professing the sound of the
303, known as the Acid Budda. I especially like efforts
under the moniker Jack Frost & The Circle Jerks. Listen and
dance to Acid Man, Cool & Dry, Tom Tom. In the acid archive
I also like Stomach Acid and Battery Acid by Overdose and
Six Brown Brothers (Die Warzau!) respectively. Please also
listen to Hot Hanas Hula with several hilarious
contributions from the 80's. For housey acid, tune in Larry
Heard.

Humanoid and 808 State did a lot for the development of a
European acid sound, moving from house to techno. Their
experiments still inspire our favourites, e.g. AFX.

Mike Dred is "the Jimi Hendrix of the 303", a "full on acid
genius". He is too little known for the general techno
audience, overshadowed by friend and admirer AFX.
Freaquenseize is soothing listening full of "synthetic
electronic sounds/industrial rhythms all around". The
Universal Indicator series on Rephlex is mainly his work.
Also check his own labels, Diatomyc and Machine Codes.
Dred's live sets are unsurpassable analog trickery.

I like the raw, ravey sound of Djax, especially by Acid
Junkies. Thomas Heckmann has given us several great acid
tunes. Unit Moebius is an industrial hardheaded secretive
acid order.

Prototype 909 was a tremendous New York-breed of the
igniting Chicago movement.

Today strong acid currents are energised by Napalm Enema
Records.

Ceephax is a trustworthy acid promotor, at least in his
manic live sets.

No space left. Or?

As for the holy trinity of AFX-Squarepusher-Vibert, I don't
regard them as spearheading the acid movement. Certain AFX
takes are great (Gibbon, some Analord, some Tuss, foremost
the acid mix of Heliosphan and the [second Youtube part of
the] 2002 Rome live set), but in acid general I prefer
Jenkinson (Vic Acid, Selection Sixteen). Vibert is virtuos
but in my taste somewhat boring, too housey. His acid
deconstrution with Jeremy Simmonds in Weirs is however very
compelling.

In late Planet Mu style I prefer The Doubtful Guest and
Syntheme. I haven't heard Global Goon's acid.

An interesting underground release is Open Transport by
MDK.

As for acid deconstruction I next want to engage with
Hecker.

You should check out Global Goon's acid. 'Saint Aime' is
excellent. I never really liked the stuff he did before
much. He's found his niche.

As for everyone else you're talking about, I respect and
love listening to Humanoid, Mike Dred & 808 State. No doubt
they're pioneers. But what AFX is doing (with Analord &
Tuss) is just on a new level of acid goodness.

I don't doubt you know much more than me about acid, just my
opinion.

md_geist:

There are at least two senses of acid. I think acid
originally meant the tweaked use of synthesizers in general.
Acid was not a single sound, perhaps not even sound specific
or genre identifiable. It was an attitude how to work the
machinery, how to experience sound, how to dance.

Gerald Simpson's Proto Acid (2006) is a forwardlooking retro
example, reconnecting and revitalizing the roots for further
growth. In the linear notes, he declares: "In the beginning
Jack had a groove. That groove was fucked so many times
during the 90s that some of us had to leave and go hide in
the jungle til it was safe to come out again."

I think SH-101 and MC-202 originally were acid synths equal
to TB-303. I understand the 303 fetischism as a later,
perhaps European rave phenomenon (although Adonis was
portrayed as the Acid Budda with several 303-s around his
enlightened head).

Now we have A&D techniques gushing a new acid wave. I concur
that Anlord and Tuss projects are great acid in this first
sense. They rock, laying patterns never heard before.

My obsession however lies in the mere sound produced by the
303. I am rescuelessly captivated. I find it utterly
compelling. My introduction to acid was in a small crowded
disco room detonated by J Kallback on a Roland TB-303,
nothing else. The way was paved irreversibly.

The acidic subgenre I like the least is however one (with
the claim) sharing this single sound fixation: the UK acid
movement featuring D.A.V.E. the Drummer, Rowland the
Bastard, Geezer, A+E Dept., Kektex, Chris Liberator et al).
They disturb their primitive 303 lines with an insipid,
deafening 909 thud.

I honour the Chicago pioneers. Their technique has been
surpassed a long time ago but their discoveries still are so
great. Musical experimentation like theirs is to me unheard
of. They try to master this new, escaping, toxic sound,
integrate it in their idea of music thus pushing and
sometimes exceeding the boarders of music.

I really would like to hear Autechre's take on acid. I'm a
beginner on Autechre, please spread their acidic
interpretation. How is the remix of Various Artists's 8?
Gescom collective is fond of acid, right?

gingaling!

You have made 808 posts, outnumbered the 303. It is a boring
joke. But your question lies unanswerable. What makes music
IDM, rock, postpunk? Listen to abovementioned and you'll
feel the vibe.

Happy discovery!
