what's the deal with nord lead 3's? Did Clavia make like 6 of them and then discontinue that product? I almost never see them, and when I do they're still 3 grand.

wait, so you're saying the addition of led's around the rotary knobs actually affected Clavia financially? And that's why Nord 3's are so rare?

just look at all those pretty lights. slowly pulsating, drawing me to twiddle her knobs....
nah - i like to think so. hahhaa - led's arent expensive. most disapproved when it first came out. i heard it was due to a lead material used to make its chip which turned out o be illegal for commerical uses :(
J198 - is that what you were refering?

the nord lead 3 was never very popular, because it had a different sound than the previous models. It became a lot more clean, and people had grown to love the more rough sound of the earlier models.
Just a matter of taste. I like both.

Nord lead 3 also had an entirely different sound engine. The LED's were a lot of fun, but you got bored of the sound fast. It reminded me of a lot of those free vsti that are made with synthedit that sound ok but not great.

Interesting. I wonder why they decided to change such a proven sound engine when making the lead 3? I guess they thought they could outdo themselves?

Yeah. The lead 2 was just an upgraded lead 1 engine. Apparently they wanted the lead 3 to help expand their product line in more than just another name.
Its too bad I didn't just order the modular 2 like I was planning. I got compuphobic right before I payed the down payment. So in the end I stuck myself with a synthesizer that looked great but I ended up hating. Not a good use of $3000.
Its kind of ok though. When I sold it I got a decent amount. Not nearly as much as I had payed, but lead 3's have a really low resale value. I ended up getting kind of lucky and I was able to get a moog little phatty and a few other things and have been in love with the moog ever since.
I also have an ion now, which for even basic unmodulated/effected sound is just a little bit better a synthesizer than a lead 3.

It amazes me that lead 3's still sell for $3000 new. You'd think after sort of failing in sales they would drop the price to make it more competitive...
It's good that you ended up with some nice synths when it was all said and done. Getting burned on a hardware purchase really sucks.

Expensive lessons really help drive themselves home.
I am really cautious about purchases now, and have learned not to be afraid to widdle my studio down when I build it up. I am happy with what I have, so gas is rare.
