great article on how dubai is basically a slave-built and
slave maintained nation.

i'd love to just see helicopters, fighter jets dropping
bombs and SWAT teams and soldiers with m16's and armor
piercing weapons going in there and shooting all the slave
drivers and freeing the slaves, kicking out all of the
westerners and letting the slaves have all the resources and
land. i guess it's my inner-american speaking.

The water quality got worse and worse. The guests started
to spot raw sewage, condoms, and used sanitary towels
floating in the sea. So the hotel ordered its own water
analyses from a professional company. "They told us it was
full of fecal matter and bacteria 'too numerous to count'. I
had to start telling guests not to go in the water, and
since they'd come on a beach holiday, as you can imagine,
they were pretty pissed off." She began to make angry posts
on the expat discussion forums – and people began to
figure out what was happening. Dubai had expanded so fast
its sewage treatment facilities couldn't keep up. The sewage
disposal trucks had to queue for three or four days at the
treatment plants – so instead, they were simply drilling
open the manholes and dumping the untreated sewage down
them, so it flowed straight to the sea.

wow. you might imagine what it's like running along the
shore and jumping into a huge wave - and a turd collides
with your face like an asteroid

At night, in the dusk, I sit in the camp with Sohinal and
his friends as they scrape together what they have left to
buy a cheap bottle of spirits. They down it in one ferocious
gulp. "It helps you to feel numb", Sohinal says through a
stinging throat. In the distance, the glistening Dubai
skyline he built stands, oblivious.

that part really got to me...

Guys, people in different places live in different ways.
It's all relative. You're just showing your prejudice and
lack of self awarenes by criticizing a culture you don't
understand. There are homeless people suffering and condoms
floating in the water in America too.

^that's the exact statement the article is referencing as
crap.

'you just don't understand; that's the culture here'

not sure how you can call america's poor and homeless
tantamount to what i just read in the article.

hexane, nice seeing you again.

You big numpty, I was trying to preempt the cultural
relativists by satirizing their likely response.

Now you've taken the bait and it's all over. Everything is
ashes. Bobby died of AIDS. Jim ODed. And Don is into
vampirism.

firstly, do you really expect people on a message board
dedicated to electronic music to instantly intuit that you
are expressing an opinion that is actually counter to your
own views? next time maybe try a little hyperbole or some
other obvious device so we know where you're comin' from,
should we be interested.

secondly, numpty?

fun fact: "origin of the species" is banned in the UAE.
along with the gentle weed. coincidence?

I'm sorry, I keep forgetting that people here are a few VCOs
short of a modular unit.

I'm glad I wasn't wrong in my assumption that Elusive really
is Frisbee Golf. Coming next, Monoid actually is that
tiresome.

dubai is basically a slave-built and slave maintained
nation.

you never heard about the tomatoes harvested by beaten men
and raped women that work from 5 am to 5 pm onto our very
same slavery-free countries and that come right on our
salads, right?

Dubai is product of oil power and human misunderstanding of
cultural values.

Thats why I and other people, I think, dont even wonder
about "slavery" in Dubai.
