Does it make you feel good or bad to be different?
I mean, to be fair, when you really think about it, not that many people like AFX. He has had his moment, but that moment has pretty much passed and I wouldn't say he was mainstream (feel free to disagree with me on this). Least of all like AFX as much as peeps on here. And even fewer make their own electronic music.
Does it make you feel good that most people are stupid mediocre drones, with no volition of their own and (presumably) we are not? I guess I would say I am less of a drone than most, but I s'pose as long as I live in Britain I am still the same as everyone else to a certain degree.
What I am really asking here is do you feel set apart from most people in the street and, if so, how do you feel about that?

I just think its an alternative. Music is meant to be appreciated, it does make someone different, but not by very much, not on like any different level or anything.
People's level of appreciation goes into whatever THEY like.
Like AFX's Midievil Rave shit is like hardcore music for me. Like Dragonforce or some wierd Fusion/Metal type stuff people listen to to get that feeling.
Midievil Rave 1 is such a good song to play when you're feeling in that psichzophrenic/psychotic/nobody gets it - mood.

i realise every day more and more that we are just another market niche.
we're white (mostly), male (mostly), we do drugs (or have a history of drugs where we went off the rails and now only do it occasionally), we download torrents, we know what 'vst' and 'flac' means, we are partially metrosexual, we are existentialist atheist / agnostics, we've seen too many films and spend too much time thinking introspectively. we also like aphex, squarepusher and boc because of their 'lush' tunes, which we say ironically
also we are awkward dancers

Eventually I might agree with you, but until then I will carry on knowing that I am different. I don't mean that I am better than anyone, just different. And I think there are many the same as I, just most people are not.

maybe WE are a lil strange for some people, cuz they dont understand the SENSE of this musical style, that we are listening to and living in.. but I KNOW they recpect and like me for it, cuz they are inteligent too. :))
ps: i made myself a GESCOM T-SHIRT, and some friends were asking me: " whats that LOGO, man?"
i cant tell them everything about it, but they know tht im listening SPACE MUSIC, and thats enough for them ( again a respect theory)

being different from society often manifests in some sort of outsider, no, actually insider music. punk, rasta and straight edge hardcore music can give you so much when youre into that movement for example. but, to the actual question...: you are different, when it makes you feel good and you think you do the right thing or just your personal thing. and just like everybody you are happy to be different, when you get respect from your niche or feel related. (i dont think the point of being different is being alone) so, its good basically :P

tbh i don't i'm that different. i speak to people and i can't really see any radical differences between me and any other joe..
we all have different opinions, ideas, we value different things, but that doesnt mean we can't relate.
i think everyone can relate to everyone else, in some way or another, even if it's remote..
communication is key as well, id rather not go around thinking im so damn different because of something shallow like enjoying an autechre track, but rather embrace what all of us have in common, and how we can all relate and function as a whole.

HOWEVER, i would like to add that some people are of course better to talk to and be around, i dont mean that we should all join is some metaspherical emo-soup with people who are radically different to ourselves.
but i do think some of the hatred, prejudice and narrowmindedness could go. we're not all THAT different.

I see my differences as being deeper than music prefences. And for the record, I got on with people I interact with fine. :) I don't act snobbishly toward anyone (well, a few, but it rarely happens). If there is anyone I don't like for whatever reason I would just not talk to them.

This Thread COMPLETELY MADE ME THINK OF THIS:
It's Saturday by King Missile
I want to be different, Like everybody else I want to be like
I want to be just like all the different people I have no further interest in being the same Because I have seen different all around And now I know that that's what I want I dont want to blend in and be indistinguishable I want to be a part of the different crowd and assert my individuality with others who are different like me
yeah "different" to me is such a subjective word. bent and melded to fit someones own personal idea of what is/isnt. to be truthful - were all different and in so many ways individual.
i love my individuality, its taken me a long time to realize my own self-respect.
i ask the question - would it be better to be a collective? maybe for once, we could all work together for a common goal. Is unity a utopia or hell?
im not sure. as i think more of it - the factors alone are mind boggling.
GOOD THREAD

I threw on some acoustic Opeth music last year for Art class, and a kid beside me told me that it sounded very similar to Dave Matthews. At that moment I was happy for being "different" because the kid I was beside was clearly an idiot on many levels and to want to be somebody you're not (especially if you don't like that person) is a complete waste of time, so like what you like and don't give a fuck of what people say otherwise.
