Biosphere - Patashnik

Snatching this (legaly) right now, haven't heard it in ages
but felt a sudden seasonal urge to go there again. I hope
it's not as dated as I fear it might be. I saw Biosphere
live around the time of Patashnik and it certainly was a,
uh, state of the art experience.

I saw them live tonight in a piece named mekong project, vey
soothing piece with live drums, wine glasses whirling and
flute breaks. The most intersting piece was imho a
composition with white noise, a bowl of water slapped by
hands and a gong (to simulate a thunderstorm).

I'll snatch some of your recommendations to prolong the
experience...

soka

you know what, I saw him accidentally, I was at Rome
Auditorium (a really cool place for music) to see another
event that was not there and I stumbled upon this gig I
didn't know of.

It was very cool, apparently he travelled Vietnam last year
and recorded stuff he used during the live show. He had 2
guys playing along, one playing glass wines and flutes and
another a wild set of percussions.

Very Musique Concrete like

so there was him playing field recordings with the computer
and the other guys playing instruments? cool

any media?

yes, that was the setup, the show lasted 1 hour approx

media coverage? no, I saw just a photographer
media for sale? Maybe he'll release something related to
this project later, I dunno

i think mohamed meant if there was any other media involved
in the performance appart from the sound obviously : ) i'd
be surprised if he didn't use vids/visuals.. there was a
track (ep) just released on touch called outside at the
fjord i think. there's a vid included

hi. does electronic music like this get any coverage in
media in italy?

offline khrimson from the fridge on 2010-02-27 03:43 [#02368681]
Points: 1757 Status: Regular

oh :)

no, there were just these 3 musicians on stage, no
projections but the performance was hypnotic by itself, the
percussion performer played some rocks at some point and the
other was pumping air in a bowl of water trough a hose
maiking bubbles. Microphones were set very close to this
stuff so you could hear every detail of it.

There was not space for additional visuals, that would have
brought attention away from the performers in my opinion

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2010-02-27 03:46 [#02368682]

i see.. i think visuals were a really strong part of his
live performance in the past. but as far as i know he was
mostly performig solo.. sounds interesting though

we got shit the last time kraftwerk and aphex were here, and
it's still the bigger concert i can think of. only youtubes,
but for stuff like that it's not enough.

that's quite odd considering how popular this stuff is in
italy yeah.. im always blown away by the amount of people
that attend these gigs.. here there's a standard audience of
around 100 people, sometimes 200.. often 50.. seems like the
upcoming autechre gig is going to be well attended. and
occasionaly there is coverage even in mainstream media, but
mostly it's all down to one radio station.. it's pretty sad

offline khrimson from the fridge on 2010-02-27 03:57 [#02368687]

Events like this, electronic gigs, indie performances etc
get covered by local free press and by music magazines of
course.

In general gigs like this don't get much mainstream
coverage, maybe some press. This was set in a short venue
after all and national level media tend to focus on big
events such as concerts in stadiums and music festivals and
in general to events that span over few days. I think it's
like everywhere else, recognized names, even if in
avant-garde musical niches get coverage, the small fishes
get to play for a living.

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2010-02-27 04:01 [#02368689]

right.. maybe one of the reasons for this is that there's
simply too many gigs happening in italy every day.. here you
get one interesting concert per day at most : )

i take 100% of my information from the internets, the
mainstream media is set on other standards and i don't wanna
even read the bullshit that they write about music again.
where did you read about an autechre gig in italy?

i was refering to the upcoming gig here actually.. i saw
there's a few dates in italy as well but that's all i know :
)
in austria the national tv apperantly has a nice archive of
improv music concerts.. that's something we can't quite
imagine to happen here..

talking about youtube, i discovered that the italian
television have recorded some gems in the last 20/30 years

does this mean i'll see the aphex gig at 50?

i don't get it

why 50? doesn't he play there often? i saw him there at
least couple of times in the past few years.. can't imagine
him ever play here though.. sadly

*considering that the italian tv was one of the sponsor of
the event, and that they posted only videos of those fucking
punk bands

every time I think about getting a Bioshpere album that
isn't Substrata I talk my self out of it because everyone
says 'Substrata is the masterpiece'... how can any of their
other work stand up to that? With Brian Eno he has may
albums you can consider masterpieces... what i'm trying to
say is, is it really worth getting another Biosphere album
if I already have Substrata?
