is it worth buying a turntable?

OK

My opinion on vinyl: it sounds shit, it isn't as good or
convenient as CD, it's an out of date format, and it has
nerds clinging onto it, insisting it's better than CD.

Your opinion: it sounds "warmer" than CD, some releases are
vinyl-only, vinyl is "just better" than CD...

my question is, should I get a turntable? I know I have an
uninformed opinion, but what reason is there to buy records
instead of CDs? I have over 300 CDs in my collection so why
move to vinyl?

don't...i know ppl who even spin with their laptops and
mp3's. vynals suck, and most of the ppl who think otherwise
are mostly just nostalgia freaks. personaly i like cd's
because i'll remix tracks on my pc, and then burn to cd, and
when i spin, ppl are like *whoa* WTF?!!!

If you don't really like vinyl then you might want to get a
cheap used turntable. That way if there is a vinyl only
release that you want you can buy it and actually listen to
it.

Personally I like only listning to vinyl when it's something
that was originally released on vinly (ie. old jazz 'n funk
records)

if you've got a good table and needle, the sound of vynil
can be amazing.

besides, the physical approach to turntable music making can
not be duplicated with cd (even with these new scratch
friendly cd players). But for the rest, you re right...

Vinyl is good if you're a turntablist otherwise MP3
DJing(Traktor) will do just fine IMHO

I actually like the warm sound of vinyl, but I finally got
to the point where I didn't have the time to properly care
for the records anymore, so I stopped buying more. Now the
whole idea is just unbearably primitive to me.

i got a similar reaction to whale, until i bought a cd
player (4 years ago), most of my music was on vinyl and
tapes, but today i can't be arsed... digital format is so
much easier to store, manipulate, exchange... but anyway, I
have yet to see a dj spinning cd'd to approach the best
vinyl dj's

Records are good for bassy music on a loud sound system.
Records can capture lower frequencies than CD's. CD's can
capture higher frequencies that records cant. If your just
playing music in your home i doesnt really matter. You can
usually find a decent turntable at a thriftstore for really
cheap. its worth your while to get one plus people give away
records to the thrift store too i have a whole collection of
jazz at like 50cents 25 cents for out of print jazz.

Dont do it just for that. If your going to be DJing {which
is pretty lame if you ask me..... most of the time anyway}.
Dont get one to buy vinyl and listen.....its not worth it.
The only people I know who buy records are people who DJ
{which pisses me off cause they only "spin" other peoples
music, and add in little fades and shit here and there, WOW!
thats just so crazy and boring!} sorry for my rant.

I buy vinyls when it's a Ep and cd when it's an album.
Most ep's i buy in record stores are only released on vinyl.

With a decent amp, turntable, and speakers (and if it was
recorded well), vinyl can sound at least as good, if not
better, as standard compact disc.

That will probably change when SACDs / DVD audio become
mainstream.

yeah, the only reason i picked up a turntable is because so
many promo's are given out on vinyl.
