Absolutely classic album. But why is the quality of the
recording so bad on CD? I know it's lame, but is it time for
a digitally remastered version?

i read in an interview (paper version from years ago) that
they intended the primitive sound. something about it being
made with an amiga or something.

I'm quite sure it will be remastered once WARP loses the
rights to it here in the next few years. Ken absolutely
despises WARP and has made it clear that he will take the
rights back. I expect Bytes and Spanners to make there way
onto SOMA at some point down the line.

It's not that the tracks sound rough, that's not in any way
a bad thing. It's the recording that's just terrible, the
highs and lows both distort nastily.

The music though is timeless, still in my top 5.

Interested to hear about why Ken hates Warp. Obviously we
know the Black Dog triumverate split pretty acrimoniously.
Ken going his way onto labels new and keeping the Black Dog
title, Andy and Ken going in the Plaid direction but staying
on Warp. The title of the first Plaid album gives a hint at
the nasty split (Not for Threes). But what was the
background to the bad feeling? Never really heard about it
at the time and have often thought what a shame it was.

Bytes and Spanners are both awesome albums. Parallel and
Temple are good too but IMHO not in the same league as the
former. Good to see Ken back to form with the Dust Brothers
with the last couple of albums. Plaid seem to be losing it
a bit. Let's hope the next Plaid album is a beauty.

Here's a biography that Ken put together.

As for Plaid losing it a bit, I can see how people might
think that, but their recent remixes are right on point with
a more older-approach. New material is a bit more
hit-or-miss than older material, but then there comes along
an Emotional Piece that casts away any slight doubts.

Interesting piece, cheers for the link. But, I want to know
more about the Spanners period that no one seems to want to
talk about ;-)

I can't help reading that in a Garth Marenghi narrating
voice.

3/4 Heart - what amazing track, but if the highs and lows
didn't distort so it would be better.

I probably wouldn't buy a remastered version of bytes, I
love it how it is.

Yeah, the sound it has gives it that special charm.

SAWII is the same. Probably why Warp hasn't bothered
remastering it.

That's cool. Let's face it, it's marvelous music anyway.
