Hey I'm working on this weird design project and I was wondering if any of you guys could answer these 6 questions. With the data collected I will make a poster and base my presentation on it. So if you have the time: 1. Have you ever used a song to get a point across and if so what song? 2. What music do you listen to while studying 3. What music gets you pumped? 4. Which music is neutral to you (like what can play in the background without you realizing it) 5. What music defined your highschool life/ experience? 6. What music do you lean on when you are depressed? 7. Add whatever you think is missing, despite the ambiguity of my reasons for answering this. Genres, Bands, and Songs are all good and as many as you can think of...just note which is which. If you can't think of anything write "nothing" Any help would be appreciated. I'll post the finished product after finals and explain my project in greater detail. Thanks |

1. pretty much everything i listen to, to get the point across that i have awesome taste in music. if you mean like playing someone a song in order to convince them of some underlying message, absolutely not, as the lyrical meaning behind music is generally the last of my concerns (but not always). 2. nothing. when listening to music i get far too engaged to possibly bother paying attention to reading philosophy (which is what i USED to do. woo non-student life!) or anything else for that matter. 3. very seriously depending on my mood, as most music gets me pumped, but most recently soulwax (SOULWAX SOULWAX SOULWAX!) and dubstep have been seriously doing it for me. the bloody beetroots are pretty fresh as well (more of the new french touch stuff). french/electro-house is generally a pretty safe bet to get nils dancing. 4. madvillainy, clouddead, and other experimental hip-hop are great for putting on to do work to, but i wouldn't say i don't realize it, i'm simply able to let it become more of a soundtrack and be passively engaged. speaking of soundtracks, those are good as well (fight club, fifth element, mirror mask, requiem for a dream, pi, hackers, trainspotting). and i suppose i should mention the idm classics (confield, i care because you do..., saw2, etc.) here as well, although i've listened to them so much, they don't come on my playlist as often. 5. TOOL, RADIOHEAD, APHEX TWIN 6. bomb the music industry! (diy pop-punk/ska, but a bit more odd-ball, and extremely honest) is a drunken stupor late night album of mine. sublime's 40 oz to freedom is another. i guess i like to thrash around when i'm depressed. that's when i want to amplify it. i will also just go dj some dubstep and try to forget about it all. 7. i'm a dj so when i am working on/finish a mix, i will listen to almost nothing but that. seriously, i will be rendering new versions constantly, and listening and tweaking on loops. it borders on obsessive. |

What music do you listen to while studying Almost always Selected ambient works II, it's very non-invasive. That or classical music (Especially Chopin) 3. What music gets you pumped? Roger and zapp, and most other 80'ies funk style. Rick James, Cameo, Gap band, Barry White. That and old style motown music, the drifters, four tops etc. 4. Which music is neutral to you (like what can play in the background without you realizing it) Run of the mill pop rock like Coldlplay 5. What music defined your highschool life/ experience? Atari Teenage Riot, Aphex twin and Daft Punk 6. What music do you lean on when you are depressed? Doesn't happen that often, but Van Morrison (He speaks very cleverly on the issue of depression) The Cure and especially Tom Waits (Rubys arms or Tom Traubert's Blues would be tear jerkers if i was prone to crying) |

I dunno, theres a few that u hear and think i wish x would listen to this and get from it what i am, but often i find if i say to someone/they say to me, sit daan and have a listen o this what ever is being played has a some what dimminshed meaning, its better to find a song that gets a point across to urself. catch 22! 1234 1234 is one that i put on when i want some one to tell me to stop feeling sorry for myself. 2. What music do you listen to while studying alsorts, but always stuff from my existing libary of known musics thats familliar to my ears, listening to anything new distracts too much, or mark radcliffe and stuart macconi on radio2 3. What music gets you pumped? pumped for what? dark militant dnb/jungle sounds make me wanna go out and do bad, the standard teenage angst ridden early to mid/late 90's punk makes me wanna ride my bike hard, breaks make me wanna get big eyes and dance, idm/electronic type stuff makes me wanna be at home after a night of the former.. the list goes on. 4. Which music is neutral to you (like what can play in the background without you realizing it) static.... dunno really anything if its played quiet enough. 5. What music defined your highschool life/ experience? punk and ska type of stuff really, was pretty narrow minded at school age, if it didnt have power chords it was nothing. 6. What music do you lean on when you are depressed? catch22!, streetlight manifesto (effectively the same band) mad caddies album quality softcore, if i'm on a proper big low i'll tend not to be listening to anything that much at all tho. 7. hey thanks everyone who responded, this is perfect. I'll make sure to post up all the results (it's due in about 2 weeks) I appreciate all the help. and dirty priest, I'm sorry it is a bit abstract, what I'm trying to ask is have you ever used a song to enhance an argument or opinion you have. I guess an example would be how music is used in theater to change the mood or amplify the meaning of the story. Or even making a mixtape to send a message to someone...hope that makes sense. |
