So we all know there's plenty of haters out there (and in
here), but there should be enough people here to warrant
this.

Post your favorite new dubstep releases and discuss them.
Woo!

Of two releases which hugely surprised me recently (as I
hadn't heard anything by the artists before), one is Sub
Scape's Bad Man single. Bad Man has got one of those basses
which just sticks in your head, almost as bad as the classic
Night by Coki and Benga, and he throws in so many cuts,
glitches and dnb-style breaks it'll make your head spin at
times (well, maybe not yours, you IDM-listening bunch, but
to those on the dance floor this could be sufficiently
mental). The heavier b-side Transaction has a stuttering,
heavily distorted bass that never lets up save for an eerie
breakdown featuring little else but a music box synth.

The other excellent record I've heard recently was TRILL002
from Trill Bass. This is simply some of the heaviest
dubstep I have ever heard. Soundcheck (VIP) opens with some
really mean emceeing on top of glitched-out wubbling basses,
but Mafia is the winner here. Despite its repetitiveness,
this is flat out the most menacing bass ever to touch planet
Earth. The Amon Tobin-esque opening really doesn't prepare
for the audio onslaught you're about to receive. Stackin
gives the hip-hop head's something to listen to with some
slowww raps on top of heaavvvy bass drums and some real irie
horns, maybe like Bassnectar with a bit less melody, or
Joker.

Speaking of Bassnectar, the promo of his track Heads Up got
leaked about a week ago, and it's fucking excellent. The guy
knows how to rock a party.

Also, the Steppa's Delight compilation has got some great
rare tracks by a number of the genre's already-established
greats (Kode 9, Benga, Shakelton, Skream, The Bug...).

So what are some gems you all have discovered lately?

I downloaded a lot of dubstep, and while there are some good
moments, I generally don't like the basses and distortion,
nor the 'simple' sound design in most of the tracks.
I do think the rhythms are good, but Burial is the only
artist I've found whos been somewhat more 'advanced'..

just burial and boxcutter (neither of which are really
dub-steppy dubstep)

if you're looking for something a bit more complicated
(read: idm) i would recommend checking out boxcutter and
bassnectar. also, amen andrews vs. spac hand luke (luke
vibert) is an obvious choice.

How is Skream regarded in the community?
Is he one of the big guys?

skream is one of the most consistent producers out there,
although i think his style is probably a bit minimal for
most here.

one important thing though: are you listening one a system
with a subwoofer, or at the very least, good headphones?

i only ask because i've known a couple people who listening
to it on laptop speakers and had no clue as to the appeal.

skream's been fucking about one too many times with
saxomophones and other shit. he's also a bit more
dub-orientated these days. his earliest stuff is still the
best (read skreamizm vol. 1+2)

my monitors cut off at 60 and i have no sub :(
one of his track Sub Island I couldn't even hear the
bass.:P

But yeah, I know that sucks for dubstep, but its not like
all the song is gone.

I don't really follow dubstep so I don't know if any of
these are 'new' but here are some things I have enjoyed
recently:

Ital Tek
Plastician - Beg To Differ
Kode9 & The Spaceape - Memories Of The Distant Future
TRG - Missed Calls EP
and of course, 2562 -Aerial

the new pinch and distance collab Deleted Scenes is quite
nice. dz has a few nice things out, like the 2 vinlys on lo
dubs. thirdly the our sound 2 lp has got a massive choon by
sully called wicked webs. and lastly, reso has remixed
buraka som sistema's kalemba to great effect.

thanks for the tip on the reso remix, this is a good track.
and i'll definitely keep any eye out for the pinch/distance
collab, i'm a big fan of what i've heard of pinch's work.

2562 - Aerial

Zomby - where were you in 92?

Headhunter - Nomad

Scorn - Stealth

some of these might be on the fringes of dubstep, but they
are all worth it

offline Sanguine from San Francisco (United States) on 2008-10-25 17:41 [#02248129]

Ok some of these aren't so new but... eh

Cockney Violin - Caspa
Rising Son - Quantum Soul
Untitled Symphony - Bar 9
2562 - Aerial
My Demons - Distance
Angel (Si Begg Remix) - Toasty
Ital Tek - Cyclical
Hater - Various Production
Speaker's Corner (Eskmo and Antiserum remix) - Eskmo
Retaliate - Sarantis ft. Warrior Queen

Some more glitchy/stuttered madness that I like to spin...

Everything Modeselektor does that's even close to Dubstep
Eight Frozen Modules
Boxcutter - Glyphic
Grim Dubs Vol 1-5 especially the first one which is
Monkeysteak I think
Lot of the new Amon Tobin stuff
T. Raumschmiere

And +1 to the subwoofer comment. I didn't really enjoy
dubstep until hearing Benga and Skream rock the campout down
here last summer. The turbo soundsystem was just being owned
by them, freaking surreal how good the bass FEELS when it's
played

You're talking about Raindance right? Hellof my friends were
there, I'm so pissed I didn't go, sounded like an epic
show.

I'm actually moving to Oakland/Berkeley (It's like right on
the line, I dunno which exactly) in a week. Whereabouts do
you? We should definitely get in touch, I'm looking to DJ
things other than house parties, which is all there really
is in Santa Cruz.

so that dj rupture album people are talking about... pretty
lackluster to be honest. he uses the same simple subtractive
synth for every track almost, and the bass never really
gets... bassy. it never gets those deep bass drops or the
wobble that's typical of dubstep. there's a couple good
points, but over all it sounds like someone trying to hop on
the dubstep bandwagon without really "getting" the genre.

on the other hand, koan sound's single for blessed and
clowny is massive. this guy really knows how to make his
bass snarl, and thankfully both of these tracks are
structurally a bit more varied than mafia which, while
having an amazing sound, was a bit repetetive. i'm
definitely going to be keeping an eye out for what this guy
releases next.

just been listening to hayoka. really excellent release
blending dubstep, glitch and some idm tendencies. some big
hip hop type beats which actually remind me of orange dust's
bitches and sandwiches ep (which i've been listening to
since all that aud-stim made it's way to the top of the
pile) and some fat subbasses.

subbasses is an impressive looking word.

am I the only one who can feel special by hating on dubstep
and it's retardedly slow pace?

to add some more bile to the thread:

Burial is trendy SHIITE that will die once all the hipster
wannabes grow a pair.
(you have to say it like this: shee-ite; so that others know
you mean business. and that you like to insult a portion of
the Muslim religion. wicked cool!)
