i have 6 or 7 four-cd trance compilations called 'trance
100' from the early to mid nineties.

after volume 3 things went downhill fast.

volume 1

some real gems on there. the best probably being 'grooveyard
- mary go wild' although that might not strictly classify as
trance.

before I found out about the "Good Electronic Music," I had
this one cd by DJ Brian. It was called Hardestertrance2, and
I really liked it. I downloaded it again a few months back
and it's still pretty good. So that is my trance
recommendation.

the rising high records label had some good tunes back in
the day

some obvious expamples:

barbarella
pioneers of the w also in the aetechre dj set posted a couple
of days ago
that perry and rhodan tune still love this one tbh
couldn't find the caspar pound remix, which is ace! this version is pretty much crap, but because
the caspar version is so good i had to post it anyways
and dave clark did some good trancey things as well back in
the days

come to think of it there's lots of good stuff

sorry, forgot to mention the obviuos:
choice - acid eiffel
this track is actually way too good to be put in the trance
department

and also
B.W.P. experiments - Feel the house of E. those crazy belgians knew their trance back
in the days. it's awesome to see how they en mass used that
FUSE track "substance abuse" and turned it into a new
genre.
and also by the same makers

all these are (acid)techno and/or house, not trance.

trance is as easily misused as techno. but back in those
days, the early 90s, before things got commercial, there
wasn't such a clearcut definition as far as i know. hell,
the KLF were one of the first to coin the term
"trance" and may well be seen as the originators. but i'm
sure that isn't trance in your book too.

no, techno is easily misused to label a whole bunch of
electronic styles with a 4/4 beat.

if you don't recognize that what laurent garnier or dave
clarke do is vastly different than trance, as made by paul
van dyk for example, to name just one contemporary trance
(and there is no room to call his music anything other than
just that) producer, i suggest you do some more research (or
listen with your ears open),

trance

techno

for the record, i don't believe in clear cut genre
definitions, but i dare you tell dave clarke what you think
of his trance music without getting either laughed at or
smacked in the face.

offline J198 from Maastricht (Netherlands, The) on 2009-06-25 16:03 [#02300063]
Points: 7342 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

and another thing,

do you think that early garnier track is ok to be classified
as trance just because someone put on a compilation called
history of trance or what?

it's a great track, but if this is trance, then so is saw1,
but wait, didn't we settle on ambient techno for that one?

not that it matters, of course. i'm just trying to make
conversation. music is great, isn't it?

I like Paragliders, especially Oasis. But what do I remember
from trance? You have this bastard techtrance with
qualitative X-Dream, The Delta, Midi Militz, Spirallianz.
They're all the same. Der dritte Raum makes great trance,
Koxbox was a fine Danish band, perhaps more goa oriented.
Sven Väth and Bruno Sanchioni are good producers, Emmanuel
Top okay. I'd always add a splash of acid, hic est acid
trance: Art of Trance, some Hardfloor, Union Jack etc.

The genre notion rave seems to cross-fertilize trance, acid
and drum'n'bass. That's the Nordic fashion. You'll find more
trancier and good rave music on early Mayday compilations.

Nah, it was killed when the trance-police ordered that only
Paul van Dyke or clones of him can be called trance.
Ironically, some might argue trance was killed right there
at that point in time.
