Matmos is one of my favourite artists.
It's really avant-garde, varied, 'artistic' music. Yet no one has ever mentioned it one here.
Why?
Also, The Books.
Anyone like them?

if i remember correctly the books are quite well regarded here. lemon of pink is an absolutely sublime album.
on the other hand i don't know if mamtos have had such a warm reception. i personally wasn't too enthused with what i've listened to, but i don't think i've listened to too much either.

Well, I guess it might seem a bit pretentious, I dunno. Hence the 'art music' labelling. Wasn't sure whether to omit that part or not...
Glad people like The Books, though. Lemon of Pink is indeed a sublime album! =)
In relation to hearing more of Matmos, I think they need a lot of listening to get into, so I don't blame people if they haven't got into them yet. Last FM is pretty shit for it, so I can only see SLSK as being a viable way of giving them a listen.
Supreme Balloon, though pretty different to the other albums, may be a good place to start. It is a good way to ease yourself into Matmos. A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure is good, too.
they use some weird sounds too, making music "out of the preserved uterus of a cow." Not to mention the sounds of liposuction, a five-gallon bucket of oatmeal and the pages of a Bible turning.

Matmos is one of those groups you really want to like, and really think what they are trying to do is cool and interesting.
But....
I don't know. I liked The West, Civil War was good, Chance to Cut I had to warm up to but it grew on me. Rose has Teeth I bought but only listened to a couple times...
It just seems like they art-try too hard sometimes, or something. Something that feels forced, maybe, or not always in the best tact or taste..

Of the ones that I own: The Civil War was awesome, unique yet listenable. This I think is different from the other albums in that the concept is expressed musicially, that is it is a fusion of two sounds, where as the other concepts are "meta-music" or about the process of creating music. However, The Rose has teeth in the mouth of the beast was terrible. I think they put too much emphasis on the concept than making actually pleasant music. A chance to cut has a few good songs, but I didn't like it as much as civil war, just too gimmicky.

i just want to say that Supreme Balloon is quite good. i hadn't really checked it out until now, but i am liking it a lot.
This one is 100% electronic, no samples, spoken word, etc. just synths. it sort of reminds me of cylob, but not exactly. it has a playful melodic squelchy thing to it tho.

No ones mentioned it because we were already discussing it decades ago before we degenerated from 'fags who like idm' into just 'fags'.
Otto von schirach's 8000 bc and crunch's 1 would blow the tits off a moose.

Well if aphex and autechre are any indication I'd assume only the early releases, like a chance to cut, mattered and anything released in the recent great idm depression wouldn't be worth discussing.
