k i will =) which is shackletons's latest? not that i'm lazy
to search by myself, just to be sure.

you know, shackleton is definately overcoming burial in my
tastes, although he seems to do not have the burial's
attitude to make every track sound like a little story. it
seems the missing ring between burial and deepchord, but of
course i'm starting to talk a lot of bullshit here.

i dont think there is any comparison between shackleton and
burial, its two totally different things. shackleton has a
much more minimalistic approach and thats why he is
currently remixing minimal techno. shackletons latest is
called soundboy's suicide note btw.

i do not understand how you can compare it to deepchord tho,
its something completely different, rod modell is rod modell
and burial is burial. originators in their fields.

i knew that you would have answered that way ;-) i'm sure
there is no technical comparison but the way those three
make me feel.. is rather comparable =) also i wouldn't rule
out that Shackleton does listen to Burial and viceversa..
anyway

Soundboy's Suicide Note.. you mean zis?

yes its that one.

if you listen to the roots of dubstep compilation, you will
understand a lot of whats going on in the dubstep scene. its
basicly all replica from there on. nearly all the 2step
comes from el-b's express track (a theory of mine, do not
crush me - oh mighty xlt) - now, im at work, so i cant
really say this 100 procent, but there is a track with
oriental percussion on that compilation as well.. i suspect
that shackleton is heavily inspired by this as well.

again, there is no comparison between burial, shackleton and
deepchord. i mean, deepchord is a whole other genre, its not
even close to either of them.

keep listening tho, if you think you've get the same vibe
from these 3 artists, see how they work together in a mix -
maybe you'll get lucky.

at work? you're not alone

roots of dubstep.. yumm not even know that existed, thanks
for the headz up! i'll report back as soon as i checked out
the stuff you mention, eventually with more evidence of my
comparisons, haha.. cheers!

so long as it sounds good, who the fuck cares what it was
derived from?

shackelton's latest is good by the way, except for the first
track, which is a real snore.

taken seriously?

firstly, i would be careful what you are saying now. you
probably need to read this whole conversation again.
secondly, why do you feel the need to intervene in a
perfectly normal discussion about music when you've got
absolutely nothing to say?

yo chuck, first, thanks for suggesting that compilation, its
really fucking cool. props to the guys who compiled it!

listening to the El-b tracks made me think.. not at some
influence he had on Shackleton, but the ones he had on
Burial, they're so evident! those specific 'thud' snares on
Express, they're very common in Burial's music. if i was a
hater i would guess if he sampled them.. but ima lover and i
like to think they were just an inspiration for him. Nedless
to say that Bury's (Original Mix) drums are the idea that
developed into Archangel so.. more than an originator i'd
say of Burial that he is a refiner of this music, in the
most respectful sense. i remember that i read some interview
where he is easy on saying that El-b was his biggest
inspiration, and this compilation reveals it clearly.

about the ethnic tracks on the comp.. i don't think that
some simple tabla pattern with some atmospheric samples of
voice or reverbered percussion put here and there on a
garage beat can explain the ethnic influence of Shackleton's
music, especially on the latest compositions he clearly
demostrates that he likes to listen to Arab music, with the
use of pitch, with the variety of the samples he uses and
the way he joins them together. i gave a Shackleton session
to my ears and found the connection with deepchord in the
soundscapes (the layers of noise and pads) he create to
surround his beat, would it be made of percussions, subs or
kick drums.

i'm really diggin the evolution of this guy's music, perhaps
cos i had similar ideas in mind but i wasn't enough resolved
to realize them, so i'm just glad that someone is doin it
good!
