There is a new Arthur Russell album out by the end of the month - Love is Overtaking Me. It already leaked and is spinning constantly on my systems. Hearing this album was a bit of a surprise. It contains 21 tracks in stylings I did not think Russell had explored much, from bare country ballads to soul and funk even. Some songs have a 60's and 70's feel to them and everything is very well done even when he from time to time sounds a bit like James Taylor. It's evident that Russells talent was even more diverse than what has been known from earlier releases and in that respect "Love Is Overtaking Me" is perhaps the most accessible and mainstream collection of Russells music so far. Highly recommend!!!
The Arthur Russell documetary - Wild Combination - is out now on DVD and the reviews have all been rave.

I agree on World of Echo being his best stuff, it's otherworldly good, but Calling Out of Context never really did it for me. This new album does. I've been listening to nothing else for five days in a row and I can't seem to put it away just yet. His songwriting is so unique and the way it is presented on love is overtaking me is just perfect. This might just be my album of the year....

damn. right now i regret not digging deeper into this guy's discography sooner. his vocal perfomances 's got the passion and honesty of a mark hollis/anthony hegarty lovechild, drenched in reverb. i fucking love it. for me, vocals are the single most important aspect of, well, vocal-based music.
anyways, consider me a fan of mr. russell from now on.
and i can feel 'love is overtaking me' is a grower. definitely an album which will crawl up my arm and into my eyeballs like worms.
thanks.
